Terrain Environment Sounds

Post by Snake Man »

Terrain environment sounds for Farming Simulator 22 (FS22). Otherwise known as ambient sounds or environmental sounds as well.

FS22 same as FS19 has terrain config file reference to sound.xml config file, like this:

Code: Select all

<sounds filename="maps/PMC_Cereal_Region_32km/sound.xml" />
This sound.xml config file references sounds.i3d Giants Editor (GE) I3D file, like this:

Code: Select all

<ambient3d filename="maps/PMC_Cereal_Region_32km/sounds.i3d" />
sounds.i3d

This sounds.i3d GE file has transformgroups for audio clip locations, these locations are then used by sound.xml config file to actually play those sounds. You could say technically speaking that GE I3D file has no sounds in it.

These are custom audio clips to be played, for example Elmcreek (mapUS) has football stadium with loudspeakers playing some chanting, there is a fire department building, also some emergency vehicle siren sounds unless I'm mistaken, these are highly custom to specific terrains location, if you are making your own terrain then you "must remove" these audio clips because it is annoying to field work when suddenly there is some "elmcreek wolfs scored touch down! Yeaaah!!1" loudspeaker audio playing in middle of your field, etc.

sound.xml

sound.xml config file has few main properties or XML tags whatever those are called, they are: <ambient>, <surface> and <cutting>.

Cutting is only for logging, tree falling in the forest sounds.

Surface is ground sounds for both vehicle wheels and footsteps, also there is some odd "hoofstep" which I have no clue what that even means, never heard of any "hoof" before heh. Vehicle wheels are type="wheel" and footsteps are type="footstep".

Ambient is the big one, this holds the whole environmental world sounds when you are in-game farming simulator, its all the wind noises, rain, thunder, birds, insects and even other small animals like frogs, these sounds are depending on environmental conditions, is it night, is it day, noon or evening, it is raining, is it winter... so many different configurations available.

Ambient has so much stuff its too much to list here individually, once I have more definitive info I'll write important <ambient> parts here.

Mumbling

Hell I'm actually impressed with <Ambient> that while normally I bash farmsim games environment across the board, now that I've studied sound.xml and sounds.i3d a bit (mapUS), I have to say I'm quite surprised and even impressed how much stuff we can configure, Giants did a good job there, even though environment looks like crap generally speaking, these audio options are pretty good on my first impression.

This PMC Tactical Forum topic is to collect all information about ambient/environment sounds in FS22 (and general info applies to FS19 and FS25 as well), I will post more info as I learn and would really appreciate if you guys post whatever you know, if you see me saying something that is wrong then please correct me I'd love to heard if I have made a mistake somewhere while learning this myself.

I did edit basic sounds.i3d and sound.xml files already back in FS19 terrains but cant remember much of those, so while saying "I'm just learning this" is somewhat not true, I've been using my own i3d/xml files since FS19 but never really studied them, so its not like I don't know anything but yeah I don't know much hehe.

Please share any and all info you have with sound.xml and sounds.i3d, I would love to hear it. Especially if you have some nice custom tricks to make your own terrain environmental sounds very good.

If you know some custom terrain out there that has impressive environmental sound config, please let me know as well. If I find something (never even looked) it will get posted here, but my recollection is that I never tested user made terrain that had any custom sounds that I could notice right off the bat so it might be that most terrains just simply reference mapUS without any edits.

PMCTODO this topic is scheduled to be added into farming-simulator.org terrain tutorial page(s). When enough information has been accumulated.
