Editing terrain field definitions requires a new savegame because while newly created field NUMBERS do show up, AI will not automatically plant them on savegame load as field stages are loaded from fruit_density.gdm file and also fields.xml is not updated for the new fields.

If existing field definitions were edited by changing corner pieces shapes, increasing or decreasing them, then AI will start to plant using those new corner pieces. However brand new field definitions are not registered by the AI, probably because its not written in fields.xml config file.

So new savegame is not required TECHNICALLY, but the new field definitions do you no good crop / contract wise if you don't create new savegame.

Speculation: wonder if you could manually edit fields.xml and add new field numbers there, hmm hmm.
