The creators of ArmA 2 are making a standalone expansion, Operation Arrowhead, to thire sprawling military sim. It relocates the massive-scale military conflict to the arid plains and rocky escarpments of Takistan, a fictional country modelled on Afghanistan. In its substantial campaign - roughly two thirds the length of ArmA 2's - you'll be heading up an American team again, but Czech and German military are also involved.
As well as the usual new vehicles and armament, you can now control aerial drones. You can use them to extract stranded soldiers from the battlefield or act as target designators. Aircraft can now jettison chaff to escape missile locks, buildings can be pulled apart in chunks with a new destruction system, and sniper scopes can be adjusted to account for bullet drop.
Developers Bohemia Interactive say the natural desolation of Takistan's landscape means that the game's overall performance has improved, too. We'll have a hands-on preview next issue, but as with ArmA 2 itself, the singleplayer campaign will no doubt play second fiddle to what the community ends up doing with all the new assets.
