How I work with CATE

Post by Quicksilver »

Well, here are the config files I came up with for CATE, after some tweaking and fixing errors.

Grab 'em here.

7 files in total, each a different step in creating your terrain. Run them through CATE in the order they're numbered, one at a time, re-starting CATE at each step, as Skyfire suggests (he's right, the results can be corrupted if you don't do so - I got weird 4000ft mountains with sea textures on their peaks in one case!!!)

Each config file has some comments on what they do, so you can see what to expect and what to change.

These result in a rather dry-grassy & forest-like terrain, with snow caps over about 4500 feet.

What else needs to be checked manually?
* River estuaries need to be properly made.
* Lakes are rarely shown properly, check for many rivers forming a matrix, such areas should probably made as a lake.
* All other usual problems with rivers & roads... check these carefully!
* Also be careful with coasts, many show the "climbing sea" effect, requiring the land to be enlarged 1-2 tiles.
* And of course, take a good look at transition areas, especially where 3 different terrain types come together.

Please feel free to test, change and use, and share your comments and ideas!

Excellent work Quicksilver! Slick looking conf files!

I never even tried to make airbases with LO(w) setting, have you tested ingame that the planes took of correctly, that in no circumstances they run into hill etc?

I love that variations first line

Very good work, this is the kind of help the falcon community needs. Thank You.

Yeah, many thanks Quicksilver for your work.

BTW : I was hoping I had solved the problems with having to restart CATE everytime with the latest versions, but obviously I did not ...

Regards.

Ok, I'm trying to work with CATE, and the airport.conf file is refering to a Airport.csv file that I need to export out of TacEdit...but how do I do that if I only have a airport.tdf file that I downloaded doing the Ultimate Tutorial??
I can't import the tdf file into TacEdit...I probably could enter the airports manually into Tacedit, but is there another way?

Read the Ultimate Theater Tutorial Part 4 little more careful, its explained there.

Yes have to admit with few words, but all the steps to create full campaign objectives are listed.

But not to sound "RTFM" guy like I want to be, here is the short version:

1) dem2terrain creates airport and label TDF files.
2) village util turns them into csv file.
3) tacedit imports this csv file.
4) tacedit exports airbases only if selected so.
5) CATE reads this exported csv file.

I think its also possible to feed the village util created village1.csv into CATE directly, but never did try that... let me know what it says it might caugh on the city/village objectives...

Hi,
Sorry about that, I was only at Part 2, where the UTT says to quote: "Edit your europe5.L2 file accordingly (more about this in CATE tutorial)." end quote...so I went to the CATE tutorial, but didn't find anything there... :)
I'll go ahead and read the whole UTT before proceeding. :)
