Altitude displaying in Afghanistan theater

Just wondering; is the altitude reading in the Afghanistan theater relative to mean sea level? I discovered this when crashing into the ground when the altimiter displayed about 5500 ft... I have not experienced this in the Korean theaters. There the altidude is relative to the ground. Anyone have the same experiences?

Korea displays in MSL too... just that the terrain there isn't elevated enough to look too different.
