Nordic theater

Post by 87th_striker »

Theater will cover Northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Russian data about infrastructure are very hard to integrate, because of seperate grid. Possibly I'll use OziExplorer to collect data from Maps about Roads and waterways. Data from different nordic countries will be merged into one file for each type.

Ya, theater concerning big countries like Russia or China could encouther this problem, to many tdf files to incorporate.

Great to hear Nordic theater start rolling..i think community got some nice skins for it! ( there is one nice Finnish mig21 skin at Basil's site)
BTW, what season to fight? Summer or Winter?

We are thinking of a "summer" thing with now in the mountains, and some snowspots north. I managed to do some generations here, but will start working on combining the different country data. I also managed to download all necessary data about Western Russia today. Also support among my squaddies seem to be here, so we will go on this. We are also thing about changing the tiles with Matlab, but that's just on a concept phase. We have ideas for several scenarios, but will focus on one for starter.

In the mountains, we want it to look something like this: http://www.flightsim.no/artikler/2000021/

Well, we'll see how it goes. We need software to convert the terrain to a bigger one, and Warlord is interested, so we are looking forward to expand the scenery later.

Project is coming along. For the last 14 hours my PC has been working on western Russia drainage net. Finland is ready, Norway and Sweden are about 80 %. Sweden are lacking Highway strips, but Finland got them. There are also som airbases missing in Norway, Banak being one important. Some minor data for Finland is corrupt, but will look into those later.

Well, we hope for something like late spring, but there should be lot's of snow too. So far we're prealpha, so there is still a lot to learn here.

I havent spoken to Warlord about dem2l spherical's support for 20 by 20 dem (128 segments), whats the latest word?

And when you get the actual theater.L2 files done for 64 and 128 segments, importing the "old 64 tiled map" into the larger, is easily possible with terrainview v1.48 but the lat/long coords need to be equal so the segments will fit correctly.

Do you mean DEM2L spherical converter is processing the TDF data for you? Heh I can imagine it takes damn long for heavy datas like Russia or China.

Snakeman, it took 36 hours !!!
And the file was corrupt, too, but that doesn't have to be DEM2L problem. I will check out those perls.

From 87th Stray Dogs several other persons are involved right now, takeing a first look at terrainview. Tornado, Swede and Vaff will be responsibel for separate parts of th theater. Vaff going into Russia today, I think. (He was stopped by two T-72's the other day :-) )

OK, We have autotiled Nordic with standard script and tiles. Idea is now that we fix airbases infrastructure and major other things, but we have ran into one major problem with the autotiling. Finland is known as "Land of thousand lakes", and Norway and Sweden are pretty crowded with lakes too. Anyway, drainage TDF is outline, so all lakesides are tiled as two rivers with land between. Any modified scripts for this ? Anyone got an idea ? To fix this will take ages manually.

We also need new tiles for narrow lakes, small islands, and high mountains class 2 and 3.

Another problem is roadnet and ferrys. Does campaign need a bridge so a vehicle can cross a fjord ?

Perls work, but not with Spherical Converter, its decision time. spherical conversion or none.

No scripts to handle lakes.

Those 3D models loook great, guys !

Hope we get to this stage soon, I'm tiling up and down, the first things now look sloppy, so I have to brush them up. Lot's of height data to be adjusted, too.

Check out this article about a 3-dimensional map. The article is in Norwegian, but check that picture. It would be nice to fly in amongst those peaks, canyons and fjords.

Might as well take a look at how this technology looks animated. It's 3 years old technology, but the essecnce of the article is that high resolution graphics for normal pc's and simulators are available, even with high resolution. Would be something for eFalcon.

Just wanted to mention that we are tiling along.... In coastal areas about 15 % of the tiles have to be height adjusted....
