tiling a new terrain

Post by cihat »

hi falconeers,

to make a new terrain, i have downloaded DEM data, obtained .HDR file and necessary .TDF's. Then i followed the instructions on tiling tutorial and there comes my questions.

for configuration part: should i create a new directory?

how can i obtain a texture bin? or can i use the texture.bin located at korea directory?

for tile assignment part: when i double click on a segment i got complete red square. is this a palette problem? or what.

if anybody can help me i appreciate.
thx.

As it is indescribably easy to screw a perfectly good F4 installation, then Yes... do everything in a separate directory.

The texture.bin in /Korea/texture is perfectly fine, until you make/add custom tiles, then you need to create your own.

A complete red square means the TView doesn't find the actual tiles assigned to each block. This can go for a whole segment or just a tile within the segment.

Be advised, if you continue down this path, be prepared for many late nights of total frustration until you get it to work properly... it can drive a sane man nuts :)
Feels great when it all works though!

cihat, you want to make Turkey-related theater?

I remember Kfrge's working on a similar theater, better check first to avoid duplication.

Thanks for replies men,
OK! i'm ready to spend nights in front of my computer and i have my cofee already.
Although terrainview 1.5 seems to accomplish many features, i don't know which step should i go first. the tiling tutorial is a bit confusing for me. so each step i hitced, i will be here with questions i am afraid.

well ccc, the zone covers 20.0000-42.0000 N, 19.0000-31.0000 E (Aegean Sea) and i can obtain more accurate information about Turkey for both tiling and objects.
it would be fun to fly over bosphorus. I'll contact Kferge.

I have unsuccessfully tried to locate the Kfrge among the f4community members. Is this the call sign or name? Is there any "search members" facility? Can you help for contact?

Sometimes political conflicts occur between the Turkish and Greek governments for the Aerial Space. So, aerial engagements are experienced time to time between two country's pilots. But as far as i concern everything is coming up roses nowadays.

For my terrain, i replaced the .THR, .O2 and .L2 files with the ones XANIX's Portugal beta theater and tried. the terrain tiled somehow but still i got the red square on TView. How TView find actual tiles assigned to each block?
Is it possible to edit tiles manually one by one for each sector? (i know, it sounds crazy)

Cihat,

I began working on a Turkish Theatre before this past summer. However, I experienced some problems, lost files, etc. and am generally beginning over again. It focuses on the Black Sea and general area around Turkey, Bulgaria, Ukraine, etc. Still a lot of work ahead of me but I can send you an image of what I am working on.

cihat: you can use our tiling tutorial, just replace "ODS tiles" with "Korean tiles" and you'll do just fine.

krfrge: I still have your theater files here, just say the word and I'll send them back.

Snake Man,

What did you think of the region I was working on? Since I have started over I shifted over to the east and have all of the Black Sea now. Suggestions?

Snake Man: terrain.doc is very helpful. i jumped over another hurdle. but what "ODS" stands for? i unzipped the texture.zip H*.pcx files into directory and used them. anyway, so far so good.
i understand that, it is possible to make custom built tiles for specific areas, but how? is there any limit for the numbers of tiles used for a theater?

krfrge:yes! please send the pictures. is the region that you are working on recently, the whole black sea? any part of caucasus or caspian sea included?
please don't hesitate to ask any help that i would provide. (skins, 3ds models, pictures etc.)

Please read out texture tutorial for basic information. Then ask more questions :)
