Modeling style changed.

Post by ccc »

my modeling stuff will aim at much lower poly count, means more blocky/cartoonish looking, but the dimension and shiloutte remain correct, shouldn't hurt the pleasure in campaign.

Rough modeling sounds like counter-trend, retro, comparing with more and more detailed modeling in LOMAC/SF/CSF. the reasons here:

1. lod masters are few and all buzy.
2. complex ones in lod take lots effort and time to restructure models, nail look-thru bugs.
3. complex ones took much time to texture-map
4. many 3d stuff need to be create, building one after one in months' interval hurts the design of theater campaigns.
5. hopefully skillful skin artists can compensate the low-poly visuals.
6. DOF/Switch be omitted or reduced to minialize workload.

Why?

Even now in Falcon I barely come into the range to see all details of a jet and watching the own F-16 becomes boring after a while...

The terrain modelling, sense of speed, ground object density, forests and photorelailistic colors are MUCH MUCH more important to me... also the lightning and weather effects btw...

This post on Frugals is another good reason to use low-poly models. fighter of F104 size, if you ever DF against it in f4, you can hardly tell its detail..only shiloutte.

SURE.
i've no interest in detail modeling from the very begining.
complex modeling should be left to professionals, or those can devote whole their free hours.

Hi CCC,
I can fully understand your motivations do reduce the polys for modeling, also with the upcoming F:OIR development and release(however I don't think the models they showed as previews are meant for OIR but for FV, and yes I know about the Z-buffer trouble).
However I think there are moments where detail does count, like for example when taxiing and looking around on the strip. But more while flying in close formation, that's where the reality feel kicks in imo.
Anyway, I fully inderstand yr decision mate.

This scale-down pic shows low poly test:

total node 152, many missile LODs use much more nodes than it.
Though look like sh*t at close distance, you should be able to make *correct* recognition at far distance.

That a buccaneer? Anyways, I think low-poly stuff should be fine if we're just trying to get a model for something so we can put it in the DB... it can always be upgraded later

Yup. for filling the blanks.
As for further upgrade(by somebody else).. i dont expect that could happen in months, maybe one year later.

Hi ccc,

Believe me, I understand your reasoning, although I'm inclined to agree with Aeyes on having nice models for taxiing and formation.

I almost wish I hadn't put the damn openning canopy of the F-16. I'm up to about 2500 polys now, and what a pain it can be to eliminate look-throughs.

It's worth it to me though. I'll see if I can attach a pic of the latest progress on the F-16, if not, I'll also post an url below where you can see a pic.

Thanx Pumpyhead.
nice opening canopy, we need expert like you..i know you put all your time on F16 bug-shooting, so i hardly ask you for convesion assistance.
we all like hi-polys. and I exclusively like modders build hi-polys for me/us...you never know how long it take to nail all bugs hehe.
