Big thanx to Quake for conversion.
low poly make this one look blocky and cartoonish. also low poly results in odd triangle shadding.. anyway it works, an overnite product i think.

second try on buc skin to eliminate odd shading. it failed. If shadding problem could be corrected, the model should work fine, at least as good as outdated blocky F-4E.
Even so, filling the slot should be ok.

Another low poly test. this one looks better, thanx Quake for conversion.
pic shows the second item of Project: Italian Navy, The Lupo class.
Upper structure is simplified to reduce conversion workload, while trying to maintain a correct shiloutte.

With all due respect, ccc, the models look ugly, if not worse.
Com'on! You know it!
You look like a spiteful child!
Let's do it beautifully as you've always done.

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
nope.
most falconeers/modders cannot do lod conversion, so we never know how hard it is to convert a complex hi-poly. Take a look at Mike's F16XL, it takes months, and will need one more month to nail last look-thru bugs.
Personally, i dont know how to convert models, and i perfer NOT to add workload on those help me.
Quake is very kind to provide help, the Buc takes 15min, and Lupo 5-10 min.
Im very happy with this production rate, and suppose the minimal time spent wont hurt our RL.
Whoever want hi-poly models got few options:
1. submit your request to G2i/F12
2. submit your wish to modeler--especially lod conversion expert.
3. grab your LodEditor and start to learn lod conversion, then try to convert a hi-poly.
Remember, Im not professional, pliz dont expect modders can always bring you professional quality. sure, if Database guys think these low-polys are too ugly to be added in DB, shoot me a mail and i can close threads immediately.

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
Just some thoughts here....
First I most say, that can't see the pictures you have attatched CCC (useing IE 6)
1. What is the point of creating new models if they have the same poor structure as Falcon had in the first place. ?
2. Wasn't it the basic idea when "we" first started to edit the 3D models in Falcon 4 to increase the visible detail?
I have read all the tutorials of how to convert 3DS files into Falcon and it takes too long and is too complicated for my taste.
So I can understand you.
/me looks at what his been writing.. "My god, I start to write as a lawer"

so basically ccc's proposal fullfills the second part
having basic simpe stuf in is a good idea
later anyone who likes can make better versions
basically it is nice that someone make 1 or 2 detailed models and other five simple ones
all is wellfor me
new stuff isnew stuff and I am always happy with that
but first of all the modeler should feel happy with what he is doing
then if the user likes it too
that is a big pre..

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
You got it Widowmaker.
for #1, i aims modeling at entrance level of detail, save all our time and effort while filling as many empty slots as possible.
Hi-polys will consume too much resource on very very few items, which makes campaign/theater got their very wanted items at several months' interval. Can you live with such theaters/campaigns and still call it total realism, reflect the real OOB?
Simple modeling is the only way to solve this problem.
Besides, you cannot expect LOD experts will build all vehicles on your wish list.
Swede, we can have low-poly Viggen and Gripen ready in days, but no idea when hi-polys can be done. you choose to fly low-polys in f4 at once, or keep waiting hi-poly hehe?

ccc, try Fred's new LE, that might take care of your shading probs. If not, just make sure that you don't share the same vectors with neighboring poly's that are at an acute angle with the other.
In other words, with big angle changes, add new vectors with the same coordinates for the set of poly's on the new angle. Don't share the same vector or you get the odd shading.

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
Thanx, i've tested it with latest LE. the improvement is next to none. Buc shading problem is all due to sharp angle between two faces, based on six-faced cylinder.
I'll use 8-faced cylinder next time, the overall quality will be the same as SU-7, which i built conservatively to test if Rick can convert it hehe

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
IMO, i think its a smart idea for low-poly now, and big later, but time consuming for the high ones.

Just thinking out of the blue here.
Since Falcon now supports a higher texture res. Wouldn't it be a great and fairly easy thing to increase the details of the runway and taxiways with new textures.

yes. larger textures definitely look better.
sounds like another GREAT project for artists.

sure, the blocky looking of F22 make it rather easier to model a low-poly FB22.

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
I didn't mean to offend you, ccc, i just thought it would be cool if we could keep on doing nice models instead of blocky ones.
Metalhead is right when he sais someone does what he/she wills, but i just thought you could keep willing to make those nice models you used to. Like "Aim high", y'know...
Anyways, thanks for the things you've been doing.

Re: New 3d toys? XXI
well, i dont think ships are that bad.
simple modeling is great fun for me, and the conversion wont take long.
Usually i can receive converted lods next day, if Quake wasn't occupied by gal(s)

no worry, we'll have modelers handling hi-poly end.
