Question:
In Iran the mountains are quite high,
at wich altitudes do these mountains have snow, and does it differ much in seasons?
any images of it?

Well what we actually have right now is a pretty innaccurate representation at snow being at above 10k, in real life it would be more about 5-7k altitude. In fact, seasonally it doesnt really vary from what I hear as Iran's climate is not sweltering hot. Of course our ODS representation is based on preconcieved notions brought over from Janes F-15. But overall it is still an alright representation IMHO at this time... GolabP has some images.

I don't live in Iran, but I do live in the Mojave Desert near Edwards Air Force Base and the San Gabriel Mountains. So...I can at least give you the elevation info around me as to snow etc. Again, this is in Southern California. Around 3500 ft., the desert plant life starts to change to VERY small ever green plants. Most of these plants are only 3 to 5 ft tall max. However they are fairly dense. As the elevation increases to 4000+ ft., the small ever green plants start to fade to true ever green trees. The trees are less dense than the ever green bushes. However at or around 4500+ ft, the trees begin to become dense until you have a true ever green forest. I don't know the climate of Iran, but I know at 9000 ft in Southern California desert, we have NO snow left on the mountains. Normally at or around late May/early June all the snow has melted off the peaks, BUT I have seen snow staying on the 9000+ peaks all year around depending on how hot it was that year. But even on the cool years snow won't be found below 8000 ft for sure. Again, take it for what it is, I live in S. California, not Iran.

Seriously, I see no advantages to using square transitions. The current diagonal transitions are far superior as they can mask repetition at high altitudes better and are easier to tile with. Using the square transitions would be an atavism to something that does not look as natural. What advantages do you see? CATE? It would not be difficult to program algorithms that allow for diagonal transitions if that is the case.
