Should we shift the map further North?

Should we shift the map further North?
Was wondering the other day if I should move the map further to the north, as the Vietnam war air campaign pretty much is based to North Vietnam.
In our current theater there is alot of "unused" terrain in the south, basically eveything below Da Nang is unused. Of course we cant move map too much up north because then we lose some important airbases on Thailand.
Anyway, what do you guys think about it?

Could you imagine if the map was even bigger?
Technically, you should move West towards Bangkok, to include F-105's out of Takhili Airbase, and move the latitude line cutoff at Korat. Eastward you still would include the Marines at Chu Lai. Later on you can always do a seperate Nam version for the War in the South.

Everyday buddy, everyday.
It was just last week when I worked with Julian Onions to fix the large map TE crash issue (again). Nothing new came up, but I still believe that the solution is not that far.
And for Thuds, yes definitely we need them in the game. This "waiting period for 3d importing" thing drives me nuts I tell you!

Its reality.
I've just imported the WHOLE old Vietnam map into the larger 128 segment map. Yes, all tiled segments are imported, our work is saved.
Now we have historical airbases from Thailand.

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Brilliant! Man, that's really impressive. Now we got all airbases covered and the all important, mighty Thud Ridge. Wow:-)
Re: Should we shift the map further North?
This theater is very large compared to Korea. Air to air refueling will be necessary. F-105's out of Takhli had to always refuel near Loas, before heading up to Thud Ridge. I remember listening to an F-105 pilot say he was simply amazed by the shear amount of fuel that was made available to them by the tankers. The logistics involved was really something extraordinary.
Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Brewskie, what is the historically correct tanker for Vietnam, is it the KC-135?
Its interesting to see this large map on campaign action, will the engine schedule enough tankers etc.

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Yes, that's the tanker, and your concern about the engine is valid. Don't have the exact figures in front of me, but the daily sortie count was astronomically huge. Secretary McNamara loved sortie counts even if everyone had only one boomer to drop. I'll get you exact sortie counts soon after Christmas, say next wed., then you can ask Erazor or Julian if F4's engine can handle it. Just to give you a very rought approximation, could it handle 1000 sorties per day?

Would this be good, would something be left out? Should this map be moved to some direction? You tell me.

its 128x128, isnt it?
it contains most major cities of SE china, Hongkong, HaiNan island, etc..
Man, can your new tools autotile it in less 6 minutes?
BTW, can campaign and other stuff run ok on this theater? if yes, I'd like to have Falkland include some Argentina land bases!

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Excuse me, Just want to say something,
with these powerful theater-making tools and new discoveries...I think theater-making has enter a new era. The all process gets faster and easier.
The only things left, my 2c, probably
1.hand-tiling to adjust details like coastline, transitiona zones, etc.
2.making new Tiles. too bad tile-making egroup gone. it now appears more and more improtant to create new tiles, to give new theaters fresh faces. I alwayas think of scaning or downloading some sat photos, then convert them for tiles..dunno if you guys ever try this.

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Andy Bush has a pretty good description of where and how the tankers were set up over at simhq.
www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/wo ... 20-2.shtml

KC-135's were the usual tankers, but the USN was normally responsible for the tan and purple tankers in the tonkin gulf. As the Navy was equipped with the probe and drogue refueling systems, not all USAF aircraft could use their services...

I'm not sure about under 6 minutes, gotta try that.quote:

I have been able to run TE missions in 2048x2048 resolution te_new.tac, but everything that happends beyond the range of 1024x1024 will be left out as it will not "fit into the map image". However this issue will be worked on by Julian Onions.quote:

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Thanks, that image was great. I'll try to see if there is possibility to add prescripted TANKER locations on the campaign (I'm afraid not, but lets try).quote:Originally posted by 172ndhamm:

Actually (heh you cannot believe this), in my last campaign, Mig-19 engaged KC-135 but I'm not sure if the tanker was shot down, well its kind of clear that we need better BARCAPS or the tanker moved to different racetrack

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Snake Man,
Since Rhino said RPG is willing to help and adding a mig17 is very easy, how about asking RPG do that for Vnam ASAP?
1.use Mig19 shape for 17, add 17's FM and weapon.
2.us EA6B shape for A6, add FM and loadout files.
In this case, we could have major a/c ready for play~ yeah~ the Flight of Intruder!
What a A6 skin?

Cool map snakeman, like a dream come true.
Yeah this is really great, and you know the veterans are not getting any younger, this will help educate many young people so that their sacrifices won't be forgotten.
172 excellent map, saves some work.
CCC good job! Can you tell us what you did?
Is that a new skin or something more?

Re: Should we shift the map further North?
Ya, two new skins for EA6B shape.
just try to paint the scheme of A6 and EA6A in Vnam era.
I heard RPG is willing to help simdata files. As new A6 model not available at present, we can use modified EA6B shape/weapon loadout for campaign. hehe these humble skins really promote the atomsphere, if you are familiar with Vnam era photos, you will agree.

Not right now. I'll bet there will be fixer for this too as it should not be too hard to compute the change from 1024x1024 to 2048x2048 size.quote:Originally posted by Widowmaker:
