Okay now what?

Post by Tazz »

I finally have the correct DEM data compiled (thanks go the Globe server that went FUBAR), I have all the terrain features matching (Germany and parts of Poland and the Czech Republic - wondering if I should add features from Holland and Swiss as well?), now what do I do?

The tutorial gets sort of foggy here, it then switches to the TerrainView document written by Schumi but I'm not working on the balkans terrain eventhough I think I should able to use the Balkans tiles for now.

So I have terrain view, looks mighty complicated.. could someone push me into the right direction?

Hi Tazz,

I note you are doing well with your theater..and now its time to use Autotiling.
Snake Man could give you some tutorial later.

meanwhile, just one question for you, still stick to 10x10 dem map? 20x20dem seems better, so you can takeoff and land heavy bombers.

Well for now I want to stick to a standard 10x10 map. Regarding the heavy bombers, they can operate out of Rhein Main Air Base (Frankfurt) and Koln-Bohn airfield (partly Luftwaffe airbase) and Geilenkirchen (NATO E-3 AWACS base where USAF E-3's operated from during the Kosovo strikes).

For now these are realistic locations where these bombers could operate from. Infact, a few years ago a B-1B with its wings "stuck" in the smallest angle position, did an emergency landing on Frankfurt Airfield / Rhein Main Air Base because it was the only place in Europe where it could land in this configuration.

Let's first get this one up and running with 10x10, later we can make a new version with a 20x20 map.

If this theater works out, I'm thinking perhaps about an Austria vs Switzerland war or something like that. Imagine flying through those Alps!! Image

Okay the Schumis tutorial is just to teach how to use TerrainView, all references to Balkans or egroups links can be ignored. But it will show you the basic operation in tiling.

When you have the theater.L2 and TDF files loaded, just start by clicking Compute Feature Tiles from Autostuff menu, this autotiles features for the whole terrain.
Or you could only autotile single segment at time, double click on segment, and click Auto icon to autotile it.

After that its just good old tiling combined with Dr. Fred "BaldEagle" Balding's LODFixer autotiler utility.

If you have any specific questions, shoot away and I'll try to help.

btw: I'm back from my F4 terrain holiday, I havent done anything since Jan 5th, its been definitely relaxing...
