Re: 4F4 - Angolan Theatre - New Screenies of Terrain Tiles
Pretty nice pics,
But... just a couple of questions... are you tiling that by hand? that´s just crazy...
And... do you remember about the maximum # of tiles that falcon can afford...? You wont be able to get more that 4096 tiles working under falcon which is 4096 square km of terrain... Not much for a flight simulator.
Keep the good work,

Re: 4F4 - Angolan Theatre - New Screenies of Terrain Tiles
Thanks for the tip on 4096 tiles Com-GP.... I have created 4 sets/groups of tiles
Basic Tile Sets
Feature Tile Sets
Transit Tile Sets
Specific Tile Sets
Basic Tiles contain no manmade or distintive natural patterns - ie. they can be repeated easily...
Feature Tiles are the above set, but with overlays of features such as cities, roads etc
Transit Tiles - self explanatory - are the transition tiles between natural ground gover http://www.666th.com/uploads/ref-tranx-sheet.asp
Specific Tilesets are basically an idea I ripped from FS2004, that means when I fly over say Rundu AFB or say LA, and i look out the window, it MUST LOOK like the real place out there, I must be able to recognise that road, that river, look for waypoints based on real features that are there in reality.
What you saw above in the screenies is a combo of Specific Tilesets mixed with the 3 other sets.
Why handtile - yep i know and it is a loooong hard task - i want the world out there to be 100% as it appears in reality - I am aiming to be able to offer the sim terrain as a training facility for the SAAF, so all rivers, roads, hills, towns, must look as if you are looking out of the window of a real plane.
That is exactly WHY i wanted to do the theatre - I dont want to see ONE repeat within VOR limitations

I'd go as far as say it looks better than the Nevada screens I've seen. Good luck - will watch this with interest

Where are you guys getting youre aerial imagery from BTW? Im just curious... I use www.multimap.com lots, but its pretty useless if you want something like more arid or mountainous regions...

King George, it is??? Which thread?
BTW Mad Dog.. is there a text format version of your MSFS Terrain to F4 tutorial anywhere? The two WMV files in the zip, i cant get to play on either of my machines, and i cant seem to get the correct codecs (even tried re-downloading). But yeah a text version would be cool, if its out there!

Re: 4F4 - Angolan Theatre - New Screenies of Terrain Tiles
The terrain was taken from the satellite IKONOS, you can buy any area of the world (at a price offcourse) but you can have down to 500 metre resolution of any part of the world basically.
I used the 2 in the screenshots from free IKONOS shots of Africa as a test to see how they show up (without any altering - as in contrast/color etc) - and they worked pretty well
On the vid tut issue - i am working on a web version, the codec as far as i remember is AVI converted, so it should paly in any WM Media player (v9 to be safe)
Let me know - i can convert to another format if you wish

KG: OK, so Im stupid...
I didnt look for threads that old... I stopped looking i think at 6 months ago. that'll teach me!
Mad Dog: if you could do an MPEG-1 encoding, that would be great. MPEG-1 will play on pretty much anything! But if its a hassle, I'll wait for the web version.
Thanks guys!
