Re: imaginery terrain?
I'm not sure there's anyplace to do DEMs from scratch - since the whole point of DEMs is to translate real topographic data into digital stuff, but that's just my impression. The good news is that you don't need to use DEMs to create imaginary scenery from scrath!
In Terranview, you can adjust the altitude of the tiles, as well as which tiles go where. I'm pretty sure that they guy who did the Labrynth add-on to the Balkans terrain used this technique. My advice would be to pick an area that roughly approximated what you wanted to achieve, use that DEM to generate the basic scenery, then change it as you see fit.
I hope this addresses your question.

Re: imaginery terrain?
Yep, that does answer it...I'd thought about getting an existing terrain and modifying it, but I anticipated massive editing, and thought it might take a few years...add some
;- but your answer does is spot on. cheers. One more thing though, I have downloaded DEM data from this site, and I wanted to view it first...unfortunately the pc i am on does not have falcon4, so I can't use TerrainView, so I tried a DLG viewer that supports file formats that I've downloaded, but instead of givin' me a 3d pic, it just generates erros galore! what am I missing?

Hmmm..actually, I'm not really "in the know" about all this mapping stuff.
And you can always ask questions here!

Well no offense or anything, but I think the F4Community in itself tends to lean more towards realism... I mean we've had fiascos like labyrinth. If I were you, I would model the mountains of China/Tibet as nobody is working on it and it would be an excellent place for beautiful scenery... but GOD I HOPE YOU DON'T USE KOREA TILES....

Amstel !
i thought i once read something about a tool to convert JPGs or BMPs to DEM data...
Had something to do with diferrent grey scales in the pic representing different altitudes !
Check around the net using DEM + conversion or search words like these !

Re: imaginery terrain?
yello all...mmm...good idea about China/Nepal...that should provide some fantastic scenery...right, but first things first: I'm converting all my data into f4 format and loading it into terrainview. But I keep getting a red screen when I try to edit individual tiles...I've loaded texture info, in addition I keep getting FindDevice() and CreateScene() errors when using the 3d viewer in terrainview. I have no idea whether the pc i have has a 3d card...barring this, are there any other reasons why this error pops up...if not, then i guess i don't have a 3d card for my pc...
ciao,
Ben
