256x256 Opinion

Post by Ned Kelly »

Hi all,
I started researching a theater based on Northern Australia but it would only be suited to Red Flag or training operations as there is no real threat scenario to include in limited space. Then going to the maximum extent of D2T I tried a 256x256 theater based on South East Asia and ASEAN nations to broaden the scope of conflict scenarios. The theater holds a lot of water so Im thinking the tiling effort wont be much if any larger than a 128x128 full terrain theater, however, I wanted to ask here what other problems are associated with such a large theater, like Download size, objectives etc.
The Feature .csv created by D2T has 8779 entries, of which about 270 are airbases. And I assume bridges will have to be entered later?
I was planning to start with Australian terrain as that is what I (and a few friends) know best, but creation of new tilesets will take time and I think the diversity needed for such a large scope of land would justify more than a few new tilesets.
Just wanted to put the idea to the theater gurus here to give me pro's and con's on such a task.
Picture of the proposed theater here:
SE-Asia
Any suggestions/ideas/feedback welcome.
data info from D2T:
Theater name: SEA1
Theater size: Regular
Size (L2 segments): 256 x 256
Size (L2 tiles): 4096 x 4096
Size (Nautical Miles): 2209.51 x 2209.51
Resolution: 0.134858 Nautical Miles
Centered on: Lat -5.61818 Long 117.179
NW: Lat 12.7944 Long 98.2977
NE: Lat 12.7944 Long 136.06
SW: Lat -24.0307 Long 97.0192
SE: Lat -24.0307 Long 137.339
Highest point: 13326ft
Lowest point: 0ft
Thanks,
Ned.

Only problems with 256 theaters are the fact that the stupid jerkoffs who put a end to SP5 development. This being the one person who leaked the information/exe to the public, and the viperops management who just decided to pull the plug and stop all development leaving the members scratching their heads of "what just happened?"...

The SP5 exe that I have on my hard drive, is fully working (well like 128's) with 256 theaters.

Not recommended... a´lthough Sp4 will bring better gameplay to 128 theaters. Frankly 128 even 64 are large enough anyway - there are tons of other theater features that need much more attention than the size itself. ;)

Thats right. You cant have working theater in the SP3 or upcoming data-edit SP4.

You need the exe edits which are already done but... well we all know the sad story.
