1- how long(in say, meters) is a 128 and a 512 tile at its highest detail.
2- what are the default tile sizes? ei, 128 128 64 64?
3- if i understand correctly, you cannot just change tile sizes at will, you would screw up campaign coordinates and location designations right? Or does the game recognize the different size and change designations proportionally or something like that?
Thanks,
Tory

Re: Quick questions about tile size
OK Tiles, no matter what there size, cover a FIXED area, that being 1km x 1km... Be it a 128x128 tile or a 512x512 tile or whatever... One tile still covers only 1km Square...
So changing tile res, from say the deafult H tile (128x128) to a high res (512x512) tile, will in no way affect the terrain and co-ords or whatever...
Just lets you simply get more detail into the same area... Instead of 128 pixels per Km, you can now have 512pixels per Km...
As for H tiles, Default size is 128x128, M is 64x64 and L is 32x32, if i remember correctly...

Re: Quick questions about tile size
indeed
changing tilesize to a different
requires editing theater.mapfile and
the building of a new terrainwith this new tilesize
this is indepedant from tileimagesize.
for instance iceland uses 250 meter tiles
so what you suggest is possible
but you can't do it easely with Korea
you need to make a new theater from scratch
for it

How about ocean tiles. Does changing those mess things up besides making the coasts look bad.
This is a 512k ocean tile im working on.

very nice Cricket.
since we cannot do any dynamic glaring to simulate live waves, better tune down brightness/contrast.
BTW seems you r specialized in tile making? Theaters need tile artists badly!

Re: Quick questions about tile size
So, texture resolution has no bearing on tile size? Why does it look bigger in photoshop? Is that just their idea of what size workplace you need?
one more question(i know
thanks guys

Tory,
nope tileimage resolution has nothing todo with tilesize
a tile is always 1 by 1 km within Falcon
independant of the resolution used
sobasically just the resolution of the terrain will go up.
(tilesize can be modified during making a new theater 250 500 and 1000 meter have been tested)
I use Paintshoppro and Photoshop for making tiles
as for fartiles
Falcon has 5 level of Details for terrain
3 of them are tiled by H M L tiles respectivaly
L0 L1 and L2
after that come the farlods wich are tiled by
the Ttiles (wich all share the same paletta
these do L3 L4 L5
read this article http://www.pmctactical.org/f4/docs/texture.php
basically creating H M L tiles is enough to test all
when you are allsatisfied with the tilesets you made you can fix the fartiles
or I can fixit for you depending the seriousness of the project and its quality

Re: Quick questions about tile size
Ok widow,
If i come up with something good 1st. ill try to figure it out, but if i cant ill let you know. Texture creation is hard stuff, no wonder it takes so long to create games, lots of compromises too. Maybe after a while we'll all get together and create one kick-butt 3fps 512k map.
Hey, since i havn't said it yet, GREAT JOB ON FALCON SPs YOU GUYS! I would eventually like to contribute some goodies too.
thanks guys,
