Solution for airfield "step" problem?

Post by Quicksilver »

I'd very much like to hear about any solution known about the glitch that causes airbase runways to show a "stepping" effect, even when the tiles at and around the airbase object have been set to an identical elevation.

I saw this being mentioned at the announcement for the latest Vietnam Theater release, and since this is what's bothering me these days, any advice will be a huge help for our team!

Thanks in advance, people.

Thats how I did it, then you of course need to copy the theater.l2 and theater.o2 files to your falcon dir and run tinstall.exe to rebuild the terrain. All should be working without "stairs effect" after that.

Hmm, wait a minute. You mean that I'll have to use Tinstall after object placement has been done via TacEdit, and after proper elevation data has been entered via TerrainView? I thought Tinstall was a use-once-only utility, for initial theater map creation.

If this is the case, then what you're basicaly saying is that running Tinstall also assures that all objects are properly placed at their relevant positions. Right?

Sorry for repeating things, but I just like to know how these things work before actually doing them.

Thanks in advance, people (and sorry if I'm asking questions long since answered...)

Tinstall creates theater files from theater.L2 file, if you edit this file even the slightest bit with TerrainView, you need to run Tinstall.
TacEdit dont have nothing to do with terrain, there is no reason to run tinstall after tacedit adding objects/units.

Wrong. Like I said before. TacEdit or objects dont have nothing to do with terrain. You can have airbase in the middle of ocean if you like (of course you'll blow up if starting mission there).

No problemo. Thats why we have these forums, to help new (and oldtimer) theater builders.
If you have something you want to know, you can use the forum Search command (can be found on top-right corner on main page) and look for possible earlier posts on search strings. If nothing is found or cannot get good answer, just post away. It wont cost anything Image

btw: sounds like you're building a theater yourself, can you tell us more about it?

Well, I'm "starting" to do some work on a theater centered on the Balkans and the Aegean Sea. Compared with the original Balkan theater, it's located more to the south. But it's all really early work.

Anyway, thanks for the answer, everything works just fine now.

Well, the map is more or less centered on the Aegean Sea. The way I see it, it could go either way. But as I said, this is all very early. We'll see how this turns out.

Hey Quicksilver, of course you're free to port over some finished segments from the Balkans...

Yes thats now possible with new TerrainView export/import.

All theater makers should use existing done segments (if available), really if someone tiles one "part of the globe" someone else should not have to do the tiling again. In future I hope that the terrain community will get most interesting locations on the globe done... world is Falcon 4 playground Image
