Problem with China pppoint.E00

Post by krfrge »

Can anyone offer advice on how I can get the chinese pppoint.E00 data to work properly? I have used the latest DEM2L converter but get a message stating bad format airport/label.

Could it be a projection problem ?

I assume that DEM data from China are in Lambert projection, not geographic, since the country stretches more east - west than north south. This should also give you problems with other dem files. Dem2l did not handle Lambert projections earlier....

Miran said he would fix it, but I'm not sure he has... ????

Is the download here the latest one ? :?

Well I pulled down the latest datum for China and opened the .E00 file using Word. Came up to 2500+ pages. Everything looks OK but I am not really sure what all I am looking at. I have heard that folks hve had problems in the past with Soviet and Chinese data. I will email Miran to see what can be done.

Soviet is a Lambert projection problem. Guess Australia has the same problem. Have you managed to get other files working from China ?

Miran, your exellent software Dem2L has been removed from Nekromantix. Is it possible to get it up here again, or is it still unavailable ?

Post an email adress for contact, or mail me at ola.torgrim.eide@broadpark.no

thx in advance

Open the problem file, and see what you find on projections in there.

Have contacted Miran Klemenc on the matter.

When I was messing with Taiwan Straights idea, china was a hug headache... Some of the data worked, but i think it was the dnnet.e00 that would NEVER process (the dnnet.e00 file itself was HUGE!!!!)... It is definately a DEM2L issue... I never found a way around it, and to my knowledge Miram never completed the functionality to process Lamberts style data.... Had the same issues with the dnnet.e00 for Western Russia as well... Happens on all 'Big' countries im told...

Be nice to Miran, and maybe he could do you a custom build???

Folks,,, I have used the Import71 and it has produced an overlay of the citys. What I can't figure is how to convert it to a .txt or TDF file so that could be used with TACEDIT.

well, you could try this execellent piece of aussie software from Des Newman
www.oziexplorer.com

You could also send me the file, and I'll se what I can do. ola.torgrim.eide@broadpark.no

Ozi has export/import possibilities that seem very good.

Come to think of it, send me your theater jpg with some names reference, and position data of three points NOT IN LINE NORTH-SOUTH OR EAST-WEST, and I'll quality check the conversion of the pppoint file too.

To those of you who have a GPS. Oziexplorer is the program you really want (end commercial)

Got something strange here. I have moved the red taper further north into China and ran the airport files. When I checked with Terrainview to see if there were any changes it did show some airfields. Hmmmmm,,,, I am stumped but will try to figure what is going on. Also am trying to divide the pppoint file into smaller pieces to run to see what happens.

Well I have taken the road file and placed into an ACCESS Database to convert and reduce the area that needs to be converted. Fingers are crossed and I will let all know what happens.

Well bad news. It didn't work,,,I get an out of memory message. Maybe I converted the file incorrectly. I took the file, converted to text, then imported into MS Access and dumped areas that were outside the area I was working with. Closed the file, exported as a .csv file and then converted to a .e00 file, ran DEM2L but got out of memory. Man this is frustraing.

Hmmm.
If you run Windows 2k, Win NT or Win XP, set the swap file on each disk to 4095 MB as maximal AND minimal size. Then you might avoid that problem. The problem is that during generation windows sees that it has has to expand from the swapfile from current level to new level. That is if you tha swapfile set to be minimum 250 MB and maximum 4095 MB, for example.

This happens in terrainview when you load TDF file?

In my configurations it means that you have empty spaces or linefeeds missing in the TDF file. Open it with notepad/wordpad or some editor and check it out.

87th Striker: I will try that ans see what I get. Stand by.

Snake: I have converted the file to a .txt and opened and there are empty spaces in the file. Another situation though, is that when I run the city data it stops halfway down the map of china. I tried an area that had North & South Korea just to the east of mainland China and I was able to get some cities to show starting at the top of the area to around mid way,,,then nothing any further south below a line running horizontally thru the southernmost tip od Korea and China.

You need to remove them. Here is example of Kuwait label file:

Label 1 873,280 1
Label 1 908,260 1
Label 1 871,215 2 AL JAHRA
Label 1 904,209 2 AL KUWAYT
Label 1 910,201 1
Label 1 912,198 1 AL FUNAYTIS
Label 1 913,189 2 AL FUNNAYHIL
Label 1 908,189 2 AL AHMADI
Label 1 875,184 1 Al Abdaliyah
Label 1 917,179 1 MINA ABD ALLAH
Label 1 929,164 1
Label 1 930,159 1
Label 1 939,149 1 MINA SAID
Label 1 896,136 1 Al Wafrah

Now if that file would be corrupted, it would look for example like this:

Label 1 873,280 1
Label 1 908,260 1
Label 1 871,215 2 AL JAHRA
Label 1 904,209 2 AL KUWAYT
Label 1 910,201 1Label 1 912,198 1 AL FUNAYTIS
Label 1 913,189 2 AL FUNNAYHIL
Label 1 908,189 2 AL AHMADI
Label 1 875,184 1 Al Abdaliyah

Label 1 917,179 1 MINA ABD ALLAH
Label 1 929,164 1
Label 1 930,159 1Label 1 939,149 1 MINA SAID
Label 1 896,136 1 Al Wafrah

So remove all the empty spaces and the linefeeds missing (two label/airport entries on one line) from the TDF file and it will work just fine.

Yet if the DEM2L2 did not compute all airports and labels, then you have another problem.

Snake,

For some reason when I run the Chinese area I still the no label/bad airport format message. I am not giving up on this as I know that something is lurking out there for China.
