any comments or suggestions?

I personally think theres got to be something better but this is pretty hard stuff. I've been working on water textures from 9pm to 3 or 4am everynight and this is all i've come up with.

Wow is right, IF i was 100 feet off the ground. The problem is that the waves are too big, ill try to make em smaller tommorrow. Up high they look kinda funny too. Also, these are still shots, the problem is THOSE WAVES JUST WON'T MOVE! lol. I took the best shots, if you panned 90 degrees, you can easily see the repetetivness of the textures. Im planning to keep working on the ocean textures till i get something great. Let me know if you guys want any of these textures. You can always resize them for your terrains. I personally think that oceans should be detailed as they are all the same texture with no objects. FPS shouldn't be a problem(i don't think?).

Hi Cricket

Getting better all the time :)

I did a quick 512x512 replacement for the sea tiles a couple of weeks ago. What I did was take 16 standard 128x128 tiles and pasted them onto a single 512x512. Because the tiles still take up the original amount of area in the sim it effectively made the waves 4 times smaller - which was nice as you get a tremendous sense of speed from low altitude.

I also had to resize that new tile for the L1 mesh so that the effect didn't have a visible seam.

If you want I can send them over to you.

I was planning on making the coastal transitions for them as well but looking at your examples I will hold off.

Hi Cricket!

This texture really looks amazing. When you have it finished I'd add rocky/cliff coast with this sea tile.

WOW. very nice oceaon tile!

be sure to reduce the repetetiveness with some magic, i mean use one single tile to achieve this.

That is really marvellous - the LOMAC guy's would be really pissed off if they could see what we can do now with a 2-3 year old graphics engine that not even uses DX8 :D :D

it is a nice screenie indeed
however
the sunglare on the sea is not usable
since it moves (RL) with motion
and it is fixed in the gfx in Falcon
as you well know.
this will be a strong point gfx wise in LOMAC over Falcon.

other then that
Falcon rules.. ;)

Widow is correct, if theres too much sun glare in a picture, its very hard to make it look right when its tiled.

T-Rex or anyone, you can have anything you want, just let me know how you want me to send it to you. You'll have to fix some things before you put it in the game though. Widow can do that if hes not busy.

How many tiles have you done with this effect? And which ones are they? :) I'm just curious.

If you zip the tiles, how big is the zip? That'll make the difference between which email I give you. :)

Sorry T-Rex, i've had some computer trouble. I'm up and running again. I'll get the file size for you. Do you need them in pcx format so you can preview them in the game, or do you just want the original ocean picture i used so you can modify it yourself??? And what sizes do you want the 512k version, or 256 or the original 128? Or do you just want the picture?

Oh, like I was supposed to think through my knee-jerk desire to see these great ocean tiles!!1 :)

Now that you mention it, the PCX files would be great, plus the original pictures, just in case I ever get the hankering to mess with them, and I have no idea what size I want. My gut reaction is to have the big one, so I can resize it to the size I think is best, but then, I really don't have a clue about that, so I'll leave it up to you. :) Whichever you think looks the best. :D

Thanks, mon,

ok the:
original tex is -36kb
all files together are 478kb

I made the texture so it is 4 256 pixel textures of the original.

Heres a good one i found, this one actually looks VERY good while flying. It needs work for a high-up-looking down view, and obviously the texture needs some work to tile without seams and a small change of the color would be nice IMHO.

Heres a version of this texture that looks better. Color changes are easy so changing the color is no problem if you want to change the color. I converted the tex to 512 x 512, then modifed the color. I used the offset filter and then used the Rubber Stamp tool with a brush width of 38, got rid of the edge differences and particular contrasting features. Thats Panther's new viper skin.

However, look at it from high altitude and you'll see inherent repeating quilt patterns. You could remedy this by creating 20+ generic ocean tiles and randomizing the ocean with CATE.

I don't know how to use any of those programs. I'm workin on it though. I know that it looks repetative but i am getting pretty satisfied with this texture. It just looks SO good in the game. Even when your looking at the "picture" upside down. One thing that i havn't don't yet, which i was planning to, was blur the texture more for the m, l and t's so it would look better higher up. I ADMIT that i take the best screenshots and do not show repetition as i should, :D But the difference is incredible to me. One thing im looking for is a good top-down view of ocean waves. THIS IS VERY HARD TO FIND. When i get good large-wave pictures that don't look so flat like the above picture, they(as you probably know) look great one way and look upside down 180 degrees because they were taken at a, on average, 20 to 40 degree slant,ie. from the shore or on a boat. That or the picture is taken up by an air-craft carrier, which then casts a HUGE shadow which ruins the whole shot. So its really just a matter of finding a good top-down large-wave picture which is what i have trampled the internet for. Even at low altitude these waves look like waves, its amazing. You guys should try it out with the above texture. When i find another good texture you guys will be the first to know.

Here is one of about 5 top-down photo based textures i've made. These just don't have as good of a "feel" to them.

I dunno Cricket, that looks pretty good. The darker color will probably make it harder to see the repitition, too?

Keep tryin, man, this'll be really cool. :D
