Mission: Op. Silent Lamb (VTE)

Post by Dr_Eyeball » 2008-01-05 10:52:12

Here's an overview of the mission "Op. Silent Lamb" for the VTE mod.
Note: This mission requires ArmA v1.09

I have ported this mission over from another mission I did for Sakakah with Desert Warfare (DW) mod, which is urban based, but VTE is rural based so many changes were required.

It's still classified as Beta since we're still testing it and expanding it, but it mostly works now as is.
Please provide detailed feedback on problems and suggestions.

BluFor objectives:
This mission has slightly more complex objectives than normal kill/destroy missions, with a dependency on other specific role players or support vehicles or actions to complete them.
(See images below for briefings.)
  • Destroy radio towers utilised by the enemy. Engineers must tap radio towers. Others must destroy towers marked for demolition.
  • Locate, treat and rescue 4 hostages. Utilise ambulance or chopper to stablise them before transport.
  • Locate and retrieve 3 special vehicles. Repair and refuel them before transport (or airlift them - if allowed).
  • Locate and kill enemy leader. Question civilians for intel.
Main features:
  • very long game play (10 hours)
  • Civilian interaction - (see image below) ask them for local information on whereabouts of people or objects.
  • Respawn inside mobile respawn vehicles
  • Respawn dialog with map
  • IED's - target groups or vehicles. Can be disarmed. Can be used by OpFor. -- was intended for DW mod mainly. Will convert to traps later.
  • Enemy reenforcements arrive from outside of town periodically to assist the rebels.
  • Airlift vehicles (updated to work in MP)
  • I.C.E. - Integrated Command Environment (partial system only - 20%)
    • obtain airdrops via C130 for ammo crates or jeeps, etc with smoke indicators
    • allows AI recruitment (only when player numbers are low)
    • Team Status dialog
    • Transport Request dialog (for players, not AI) - WIP
  • vehicles have crate and sandbag deployment
  • Field dressings.
  • Switch Coop mission to include PvP by adding players to OpFor to increase difficulty.
  • Penalties and bonuses for various actions.
  • Parameters: time and weather

Possible future features:
  • restore scores upon rejoining
  • more OpFor options - need ideas. Eg: traps
  • make OpFor fixed spawn locations destroyable

 WOW! thanks !
They train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "Fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!

Download: op_silent_lamb_v0151_beta.VTE_AustralianAO.pbo (use "Save-As")
(temp link. PM me on BIS forum if broken)

This version fixes all known problems now and adds new functionality too.

Main changes:
  • Airlift: Replaced airlift script with new (self controlled) working basic version
  • JIP fixes: fully works now - respawn dialog, markers & objectives sync'd
  • Added 'Show nearby civilians' option - to ICE HQ popup menu - too hard to find civy's in jungle to question them otherwise
  • captives - can now be rescued by chopper too (as well as ambulance)
Minor changes:
  • Sikorsky fuel:- added "reserve fuel" actions to overcome the existing 5 min flight fuel limit
  • civilians:- extra "Ask" actions
  • markers: - markers for all objectives (and their various stages and status's)
  • removed 'spawn on leader' option
  • many bug fixes
  • lots of little changes: better respawn dialog, civy's, IED's, annimations, mark towers, east respawns, airdrop smoke, ambulance respawns are now working, etc
Future:
I didn't get around to reducing the area of operations yet - it's still huge.
I might also add a parameter to scale the number of areas from 1-3.

I'm actually in the process of upgrading the base mission to include all of Devastation's new code to bring it in-line with current functionality and an updated interface.
It may take a couple weeks and then some time to port it to the various 4 or so islands used previously (one being VTE).

VTE Sikorsky S-56 bug:
The mission uses the Sikorsky chopper but VTE still has this introduced bug with the non-see through windshield. It wasn't a problem a few versions ago.
See image.

Mission improvements:
The primary problem with the original mission was it's duration of about 10+ hours. No-one has ever finished it, but have come close.

The majority of the objectives were simply tripled to 3 separate zones, so I can easily rectify this by adding a MP Setup parameter to select which zones to play. (eg: a single zone, a pair of zones, or all 3 zones.)
This would reduce it's duration, it's repeated missions plus optimise AI by reducing server stress.

With the VTE ported version, the area of operation was too large as well, so that would need to be fixed.

Plus for VTE I will replace the 'urban' based code with new 'rural' based code for auto enemy/civilian/objective placement, location name usage, etc closer to towns & houses, rather than the current 'wandering the fields' concept. This is important when trying to talk to civilians for intel.

So expect an update in a few weeks. It should be quite good then.

Thanks for the reply. Okay I'll promise that next version has windshield fixed S56 for you to use in this mission.

In the mean time I'll give the v0151 beta a go in our server. Thanks for doing a mission for VTE :)
