Reducing 512 res dds H tiles to M and L
Hey,
In the past, was there a tool that would reduce the H tiles down to M and L sizes automatically?
I kinda made one to help Ripsaw, because I couldn't find anything that did this. Which made me think that I'm not sure there's been a whole new theater since BMS switched to dds. I think people made the pcx tiles, put them in texture.zip and ran texcompress.
Now that people might be working in native dds, this tool might be of some use?
Here's the link in case anyone is interested.

Introducing the TileReducer01a.
Put all your 512 res HTiles in a test directory.
Run TileReducer01a. Navigate to your test directory. Hit install.
TileReducer01a will use the nVidia nvdxt.exe to scale the 512 res H tiles to 256 and 128 and a bulk rename utility to name them appropriately. And they all end up back in the test directory.
Hopefully.

Yes its called runtiles.batT_Rex wrote:In the past, was there a tool that would reduce the H tiles down to M and L sizes automatically?
Not really, not before you FF guys code the Add Package feature into RV so we can finally skip whole AF. Until that, we always build the theater from PCX and texture.zip standpoint. Now that people might be working in native dds, this tool might be of some use?

Is that the one that requires 4DOS and runs from a command prompt?Snake Man wrote:Yes its called runtiles.bat
Is that still available?

You're just not letting go of that one, are you?
Right - I hadn't considered that.Until that, we always build the theater from PCX and texture.zip standpoint.
Well, this might be useful for anyone not interested in building theaters for AF, or really for someone interested in just upgrading tiles for an existing OF/RV theater.
Also, I got to know nvdxt.exe (nVidia's command line converter for dds). If there's still a need for something to convert pcx to dds, I may be able to work something up.

Yes, here Runtiles.v1.1.rar and Runtiles_for_512.rar
Sure I do, when the patch has been releasedYou're just not letting go of that one, are you?
Yeah and all the kidding aside, even when RV gets the add package, I'll still keep the three version support going, I mean its not really compromising anything at this point and not causing that much more work for me, so its all good. I mean, I support OF too but cant even run the bitch...Right - I hadn't considered that.
Who knows, when LP fades away and RV goes way past OF+AF together and them some, well maybe we'll just focus on RV, but that is long way into the future (if you guys even develop it that much further) etc.
Well again no, because unless your util does the fartiles also correctly, then simply converting pcx -> dds is not enough. If there's still a need for something to convert pcx to dds, I may be able to work something up.

Guys,
I'm trying to run RUN_TILES and I can't get 4DOS.com to start. I am trying to start it from the command.com (DOS) window and it is giving me the following error:
"The system cannot execute the specified program".
I am in the directory where it resides alongside runtiles.bat and alchemy.exe.
Any ideas why I am experiencing this problem? My system is a WIndows XP Pro SP2. I've run it before with no problems on a WinXP Pro SP2 box but this was about a year ago...
Help please!

Just found out that this MAY be caused by the Windows Group Policy on my company laptop setting restrictions on starting .com and .exe DOS based files from the command line. I'll have to pursue getting that policy relaxed!Sherlock wrote:Guys,

Ok. I found the problem. It wasn't my group policy because my laptop wasn't ever joined to the company domain (I thought it had been originally).Sherlock wrote:Just found out that this MAY be caused by the Windows Group Policy on my company laptop setting restrictions on starting .com and .exe DOS based files from the command line. What the problem was caused by was because I was trying to run 4DOS (and alchemy.exe) under my \PROGRAM FILES\ directory which is protected by the standard MS Windows security templates against just such an occurrence. The fix was to move the directory out from under this directory path (e.g., to my D: partitiion) and run the programs there. BTW, you can't run them under the \WINDOWS\ path either. It is protected by software execution policy just like the \PROGRAM FILES\ path.

DDS Format
I am making some GE tiles of airbases and ranges. Would creating tiles in DDS format and converting to PCX yield a higher quality image in F4 when using Open Falcon which uses DDS as opposed to creating the tiles in pcx and using seasonswitcher to convert to DDS. I lose so much quality when I reduce to 256 colours, I am looking for anything to save a little Satelite Image quality in the end result.

Forget about falcon and its tile formats. Save your source data in the best possible quality, then you can always go back and fix, tune, tweak and restore whatever you're done.
Always make backups too
Sorry, I have no real answer for pcx vs dds question, dumb idea would be that dds is better because its (newer?? and) chosen by the RV team specificly to be new texture format. I mean, they had to have a good reason for the change, right?
However if you save your tiles to dds only, how are you going to make AF tiles with installer?
