Just dropping by to wish you guys all the best in your future ventures, I'm calling it a day.
On Sunday, my secondary HD failed, and with it has gone over five years of saves - VB projects, Panama, Work docs, Personal docs, the whole bloody lot.
The most annoying bit is the HD is barely six months old. It was a Maxtor 160Gb SATA thing. I had two in my PC, one I'd use for OS and installed programs, the other for anything and everything I save, including downloaded stuff etc. There was about 100Gb on it when it packed up. To say I am totally f*****g gutted is an understatement. I know I should have backed up critical stuff to CD/DVD more often, but after five years of using the same method I got kinda complacent.
Good luck folks!
That'll be that then...!

Sad to hear that man... but just if you haven't tried yet, there are professional companies who should know how to get such info out of a dead HD. no promises but i think documents are easier to save since are smaller. it does cost... but of course depends on importance of stuff you got there.
G-byte Nforce3 ultra,AMD 64 bit 3000+ 939 OC'ed to 2.25GHz, 1024MB 400 MHz CL 2.5 on dual channel , RADEON 9800 pro

Malc,
another utility that a friend of mine recently used (he had the same problem) was
OnTrack EasyRecovery Professional
He downloaded the demo and it pulled nearly everything off his TWO bad hard drives that he needed. He recommended it to me.
Hate to see you pack it up man. You've been a great contributor to Falcon! Please don't go!

Been looking into it a good bit today - the disk isn't spinning up to speed at all. The good folks at PC World where it was bought will happily replace the device itself under warranty, but as for lost data they say its neither theirs as a retailer or Maxtors as a manufacturer liability, and sure enough the manual that came with it does say that.
They also gave me a website of people who will remove the platters and recover the data, so I'll await to see how much that will cost. Matey reckons "It ain't cheap"...
Time will tell.
