More mountains

Post by Com_gp » 2001-07-31 20:51:00

Well guys, i have 337 tiles in falcon already (thanx to widow for making the texture.bin), i still gotta put like 100 more and i gotta finish the colorado canyon, its hard as hell to make a cool canyon in falcon.

Well, i also have finished four sets of rocky mountains, they doesnt look very repeating (well at high altitude they do) and here is the shoot.

This days im tiling, i think one more week and ill get everything important tiled, but... well still training files to be done :-)
I even have done the Hover dam at Lake Mead

for the big one...

I'd like to see what it looks like!

Well, exactly they are just two tiles, and they suck, i made this as a temporal solution, i hope to get the hover dam model soon,

and BTW, ccc, could you send me those target models you made some time ago??

Actually - I think that looks pretty cool! :) Naturally, a 3d model would be best, but I'd take that any day! I assume its on a "vertical" tile, in that you could fly up to it...err in to it, like a mountain, right? That's all that counts! I'm not sure how to model the destruction of the Hoover Dam anyway! Probably gonna have to work an "Easter Egg" into that somehow. :)

I've messed with LOD Editor (even the new version) and I even think it'd be tough to create a Hoover-frickin Dam!!! Frankly, I wouldn't blame you a bit for leaving the dam as a couple verticle tiles with special artwork. Keep in mind - you may have to have a 3d contoured transition of the dam into the surrounding mountains. That might be kinda tough.

But, since you're trying to create an all new theater, I assume you like challenges! :) :)

Hey ComGP,
dont forget to check Jane's USAF.
There is a Hoover Dam shape, you can import that P3D file, have a look, see if we can use it, or build a new one.

CCC, we can inport models from Jane's USAF for F4?? If so, why we don't inport better aircraft models from there? Look to A-10 for instance!

Not yet. our wonderful LE can convert P3D into lods, but you got lots work to sort verts into nodes and subtrees!!

Honestly, once i know LE can read p3d, i've checked almost all j/USAF models in LE, and ya, that A10 is much detailed than ours..just too complex to convert!! my2c, a new 3ds from scratch could be easier one, like what ComGP has done.

Guess the Hoover Concrete dam would be very nice to destroy. Saw a program about how it was built the other day. Hats off for the engeneering and work by those who built it. There were Conrete Dams in DID's EF2000, so I think it would be possible to get them in F4. Based on my personal walkarounds within theses dams, they will take several penetrators to destroy. For the Hoover Dam, a lot more than 4. But then again, I guess the powerhouses are the real targets.

This may be a modern myth, but I've heard that the concrete in Hoover Dam is still curing. Did you ever see "Force 10 from Navarone"? I agree that it would take a bunch of bombs to immediately destroy it, but I wonder how many it would take to weaken it to the point of letting the natural pressure do the rest. In a conventional war, I think the Hoover Dam would be a fairly high priority target - lots of devastation, little protection.

Well, as i see all of you want to destroy the hoover dam...,
When i said that making the hoover dam was hard i didnt mean the model, its probably much easier than any other thing in falcon, the problem is that i still havent been succsesfull at adding a CT record and i dont have any idea of how to make the water going out (well, i think this is imposible)

And about importing p3d objects..., well i dont like that option, almost every objects in USAF use 512x512 textures meanwhile falcon can only hadle to 256x256, 128x128,...
So that means that a whole remap of the imported object would be needed.
I prefer to make the stuff in 3DS, map it and then convert it to LOD, after that remaking the node tree and playing it...

Im tiling most of Nellis range, ive already tiled 30km up and down and east of nellis, yet gotta finish the colorado canyon tiles and add them.

Although i have the roads done and working im not gonna tile with in nevada yet, will wait until i have all kinds of terrain tiled.

About that freaking dam..., problems are starting to grow with the 3d model,
the main problem is the water level, i cant make it without altering the terrain a lot, its very hard to explain, will try to post some pic.

Com-
Do you have a full tileset for Nevada, yet? I'm thinking of a terrain in another part of the world that will be kinda desert/rocky and was wondering if I could scam your tiles when the time came? :) :)

Yes, i have many tiles sets completed, i think around 26, gotta 11 more to get into falcon and im finishing up 3 more for the colorado canyon.
I dont mind giving you tiles for whichever part of the world you want, but you will have to wait until Nevada Beta 1 is released... (not too far from now, im starting to get really busy at real life)

So not too far from now you can get them :)

Roger that. Actually, now that BOTH rp5 and e1.10 are out, I'll probably forget about everything else...theaters, skins, flight models, eating, sleeping. All the unimportant stuff. :)
