Tiling Examples II

Post by T Bone » 2001-11-20 21:59:00

Hey guys,

just to let you guys know, I am currently working on a large scale tiling tutorial for any theaters using my F4ME tiles (Iran, Afghanistan, Desert Storm, 128)... these tutorials will bring an end to the continuously asked question of : DID I DO THIS RIGHT?

Here we take an in depth approach to tiling the terrain in plain english with beautiful illustrations. Take a look at what we have so far:

(only dark mountains link up now)

Hi,

I'm sorry but those dark mountain city tiles are an absolute must for some situations i've just tiled !
also some dark mountain coast tiles would be nice so we could put lakes up in those mountains instead of those ugly 'omnicrawling' rivers (if you know what i mean !)
The tiling guide looks great though !!

You gotta make with what you have right now... 3 reasons:

1.) I have little time at this moment in time to dedicate to creation of more tiles
2.) I do not wish for others to infringe upon my tile art unless it is absolutely necessary for fear that they may not be compatitble... trust me I've been making tiles for 2 years.
3.) New tiles would disrupt current tiling.

I honestly don't think we need new tiles, we just need a good approach to tiling.

PS: Tile rivers BRANCHY AND CURVEY

Also, I highly advise you just simply delete most of the rivers so the terrain does not look so artificial if you do not know how to tile rivers properly. Autotiling is crap. LOL

In fact, the QAP tilers will most likely delete about 75% of the rivers since they seem to be everywhere. You can use riverbed tiles for some variation if you want to keep some rivers.

I also updated the QAP page... check out new Light Mountain Terrain section :)

TBone... Snake has the dark mountain city tiles... Ask hom for them... And how do i know??? Cos i spent 15-20mins creating them... As i understand, ODS and ME are sharing the tileset???

If you need them, and cant track down SM, either email me or find me on IRC...

Ok, send a link Zaggs... also are you interested in tiling QAP for ODS or F4ME
Iran?

What I am afraid of is that the dark mountain absolutely does not blend into the city tiles realistically. I mean it doesn't detrement the overall appearance of the terrain if we make the terrain surrounding those cities the light mountain terrain. In fact, we need to add variation to the dark mountain terrain, so QAP members are going to place patches of light mountain terrain for variation effect.

If need be, we can work together on the textures and fix the road tiles (This IMHO is our biggest problem with the terrain).

Mil, I take it you were tiling Tehran or Shiraz? Well if you surround the area with light mountain terrain, it actually looks more realistic since it looks like the rocky material was cleared for the construction of the ancient city.

Hmmm... dark mountain terrain should use light mountain city tiles since the rivers are not compatable, but other than that look here

Also try avoid placing bridges and delete most of your rivers.

Ok, work with me together so we can make our tiles blend in better. Share different techniques. Hehe, you must think that ODS right now isn't that good looking, but thats all autotiling. I've found out good ways to add in better transitions and more natural looking terrain.

ODS in parts looks excellent, but to make it all look excellent, will be a HUGE job... :) As for techniques, from the sceenies of your stuff i have seen, were both very much on the same track... Transitions are the main hassle... While easy to make (i can rock up a tileset (including 2-4 variation sets)in between 30min to 2hrs), tiling the transitions is the hard bit... LOTS of work... (Again repeats the plea's for TILERS!!!)

But yeah, i posted my email for you somewhere else... I guess I will hear from you.. :)

You can usually pass with a lesser amount of terrain transition tiles if you are careful to leave out repeating patterns. Also, diagonal transitions are superior to the square ones in the Korea terrain.

Anywho. IMHO A good QAP is essential to every theater. Its hard for guys like myself and ComGP to deal with anything less than our realized potential for the tiles that we created ourselves. The tile artists should be the definitive source of tiling advice for their theaters.
