Vietnam Theater BETA v0.7

Post by Snake Man » 2001-08-26 10:28:00

I have been all night fixing the bugs on last Vietnam release, there were quite few. Luckily my knowledge of theaters has grown since the last time I was digging Nam files, so this new 0.7 beta looks pretty nice. But hey dont believe me, I've said it before and the results was pure crap like rel v0.4 ;)

It seems that the list from v0.4 to beta v0.7 is following:

Whats new in BETA v0.7

- Flags fixed.
- Intel map fixed.
- PAK map added.
- Few strings added/fixed.
- Thai airbases now dont cancel flights (RP) or hung at 2nd pie (eF).
- U.S. objects changed to SVNAM ownership.
- AC-130U Spectre squadrons added.

I was up all night fixing that baby so now its time to sleep, the beta 0.7 preview version is available later "tonight" at sunday GMT+2 time.

Here is some screenshot from campaign action while you wait for the theater update.

;)

Its now available for preview download. I have tested it with eFalcon v1.10 and everything works fine. No hungs on 2nd pie on any of the thai bases for example. No fartiles problem (but simplified terrain as return). PAK map is looking fine. Bridges make up the landscape.

If people run this on i2 RP5 setup it would be nice to hear comments on how everything works.

This BETA v0.7 preview 3 is just a preview like it says, I'd appreciate if you dont make a big issue out of this publicly. You can... but its lame to see big ass news on other sim sites about vietnam new release and few days after I put out another release when some nasty bug is discovered, so keep it cool babies :)

Anyways, enough japping... 7.5mb, here it is.

Tried to apply the theater after clean install on 1.10/RP5, and got the following:
Failed to apply patch Vietnam Theater -- File mismatch. F:\Falcon4Nam\Falcon4\campaign\save\strings.idx does not match F:\FALCON4NAM\FALCON4\F4Patch\orig\strings.idx or F:\FALCON4NAM\FALCON4\F4Patch\vietnam\data\strings.idx.

So, not tested in game yet

After fiddling around i got the Nam theater applied on 1.10/RP4.1
Because I have a separate install for it i use the Registry file to push it into the registry to launch.

Here is the adjusted text:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroProse\Falcon]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroProse\Falcon\4.0]
"baseDir"="F:\\Falcon4Nam"
"objectDir"="F:\\Falcon4Nam\\terrdata\\objects"
"misctexDir"="F:\\Falcon4Nam\\terrdata\\misctex"
"theaterDir"="F:\\Falcon4Nam\\terrdata\\vietnam"
"movieDir"="I:"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroProse\Falcon\4.0\MPR]
"MPRDetect3Dx"=dword:00000001
"MPRDetectCPU"=dword:00000001
"MPRDetectMMX"=dword:00000001
"MPRDetectXMM"=dword:00000001

Note I changed the korea" into vietnam" for theaterdir.
What happens is that it asks for a CD when I want to start the exe. I had this before at another install due to a typo, but it looks ok afaik. I also tried a capital V iso v but it was a no go no show...
Must be doing something wrong

This is as simple as it sounds.

Check out the date from campaign\save\strings.idx and then check the date of F4Patch\orig\strings.idx and you'll find out they are different.

Now... here comes the hard part, if I'm right the F4Patch\orig\strings.idx date is 11/29/99 12:49PM - Microprose original... and your RP5 campaign\save\strings.idx date is something I dont know because its RP5 edited. This basically means that yes, Vietnam 0.7 preview 3 is not RP5 compatible :(

You can bypass that error by copying F4Patch\orig\strings.* into campaign\save dir, but that will break RP5 f4p compatibility... heh. Actually the strings are only to display names like ROK, DPRK and such.

Yeah I'm regular dumbass.

Like I said in extremely technical terms above that the strings.* files are the cause, well yes, more EASIER way to fix that setup is to remove RP v5.0 Strings :)

I'll add that F4P ID to the next preview.

So, remove RP v5.0 Strings to make Vietnam Theater apply.

Saga continues, Mr Dumbass II

Well the Vietnam Theater works just like designed. It removes earlier and RP v5.0 strings accordingly. First I thought that since you had this problem the strings f4p ID must have been changed but its the same...

Aeyes your setup was porked somehow :)

Vietnam Theater BETA v0.7 prev 3 works ok on my machine, eF and RP 5.0

After my 12th install I got it to work finally, the Nam theater applied.
I did have to equalise both the string.idx and string.wch on all 3 places though.
The result is some weird text anomalies, but at least I am flying back in the old days.
Thanks for the help

Thats weird. I just...
- installed falcon
- installed 1.08US
- installed F4Patch_Standard_41RP5a
- installed Vietnam BETA 7 Prev 3
- Applied Vietnam from F4Patch

Voila! ;)

Yes the strings.* control all kinds of ROK, DRPK and such texts. Its just cosmetic thing. However you should NOT need to modify anything "illegally", like my example above... everything works as designed (at least on my computer).

I see the difference now. I used F4patchstandard 4.1 and the new combined 1.10/RP5 installer. Seems yours works better then
Is 1.10 included there then? I suppose so.
I also found some other weird in game anomalies: floating runway in Danang, wingmen taxiing 30 ft up in the sky. A Mig-19 with a superlarge weird loadout in red. Some small runways that are broken in 2 between tiles and shifted a bit. I hope that is because of the way I installed because I never saw that with 1.09 back then.
If u need I have some screenshots.

Reinstalled following your sequence, everything applied just fine now.
However, the before described graphic anomalies still popped up, not the text that is ok now, but the floating airfield in Danang, superlarge loadouts for Mig-19 and broken runways

I have no idea about those installers. Its been only RP4.1 + eF 1.10 or RP5.0 that I have tested.

Screenshots would be nice. I dont have the RP5 setup installed anymore so I cant test it myself at this time, maybe later.

It worked ok when selected a flight from Sakon Nakhon to Dong Hoi, Mig-19's werent so close that I could have seen their loadout and also Da Nang was not visible.

Yes, I downloaded the f4patchstandard41_RP5a and used that as you described iso using the F4patchstandard4.1 i tried with 1.10/RP5 installer separetely.

Here are some pics describing the weird things I found with the 1.10/RP5 combo:

Image
The extramegalarge loadout

Image
The real small wingmen

Image
The floating runway

And the broken runway

well, very nice shots Aeyes! :D :D LOL

the first shot, i think CT records could be shifted, so AA1 is replaced by SA2,

the second, i see WM2 in right size, but WM3,4 are much smaller..it seems they are " undergroud" or the front runway is floating above ground level. their size should be right, just a bit far.

ya, and the thrid and fourth shots..what airbase? the gound should be leveled! :D

BTW, we surely need a solid guide about install and enjoy theaters. I've downloaded preview exe, but wonder what to patch,
f4patch41+RP5 , then ef1.1? ef1.1+RP5? ef1.1 extra? :?

Hey nices reports Aeyes, unfortunately I have various news for you.

Lets recap what I did:
- install falcon
- delete msvcrt.dll
- reboot
- install 1.08 US
- reboot
- copy Falcon_108i2.exe into falcondir
- install F4Patch_Standard_41RP5a.exe
- apply RP5 patches
- install Vietnam beta 7 preview 3
- apply Vietnam Theater from F4Patch

And we are eady to run Falcon_108i2.exe

Here are the things I saw while testing this baby.

F4Patch settings are pretty much default
Image

Da Nang airbase with F-4E's
Image

F-4E Loadout
Image

Mig-19 Loadout
Image

Not related, but found Fartiles problem
Image

So we can see that Da Nang is no problem. Mig-19 has somekind of loadout "missing" problem in my installation. F-4E seems ok. The misc runway in forest you posted, its known bug as it has not been leveled yet, its normal. And last... sad to say I found out fartile problem, darn.

Can you post what kind of RP5 settings did you use?

Will try the 108i2 later on. thanks for the help. THe RP5 setting was pretty basic, just thicked the box.

If you mean "yet" by that they didnt move earlier, then no, I havent done anything magical to the ground units since last public release.

At least I have seen quite nice movement on JSTARS display when testing Vietnam.

Has anyone flown a successful AC-130U mission? I can't get the guns to fire...

Good lookin' theater, guy!

Hi
I've got a problem with F4Patch since installing the Vietnam Theatre. The Theatre installed no probs but now I want to unapply it. I start up F4Patch and it starts checking the patch status then when it gets to the vietnam patch i get this error.

F4PATCH caused an invalid page fault in
module F4PSKIN.DLL at 017f:00f03828.

Can anyone shed any light on what the problem is as I can't get into F4Patch at all now. Could someone send me a copy of the DLL file so I can replace it and see if that cures the problem. I don't want to perform a complete reinstall unless it's absolutely necessary.

System SPecs as follows

AMD750Mhz @ 1Ghz
512Mb PC133 Ram
Voodoo5500
OS Win98SE
108i2 + RP5 exe

Thanks

Hi all. I've encountered a little quirk in the first mission in the campaign. Seems that some of the MiG-19's can take 8 - 9 missile hits without going down. Anyone else run into this prob?

Hello fubar512,

Hmmmm, it worked ok for me. They went down with one missle shot. I'm using 108i2/RP5 installation. So I can't say I've ran into that problem myself.

It took a bit (several installs) to get everything running well in Glide mode (108i2 & F4Patch4.1RP5), but, I eventually got that problem fixed. LOL, I actually sat behind a '19 in one case, and fired all my IR and Radar AAMs into it (8) and it kept on flying!

The only prob I having now, is that I encounter the devcreatesurface bug everytime I leave a mission.

I previously ran this theatre under eFalcon 110, and had no probs, other then a slower frame rate and strange "pauses" under D3d which plague both my GeForce2 GTS and Voodoo5500. It runs smoother under Glide in 108i2.

I have no problems with eF 1.10 and gforce 2 gts.

Thanks for the reply, Snake Man. I downloaded and installed the two files in the patch you mentioned, but still have the same prob. "DevCreateSurface, failed to create a front buffer. EC: 887600d4" "Error C:\mpr\ddk\eng\esurface.c OCT 8, 1999"
This is strange, why does it give a path in "C:" ? My F4 installation resides totally on my "E:" (win2000) drive!

Hi fubar512,

Which DirectX proxy patch are you applying in F4Patch? I had the exact same problem in 108i2/RP5a regular korean theater when using F4Turbo and pulled up a Maverick or LGB display in my MFD, with or without the devCreateSurface patch applied. I switched over to using the F4DX patch with devCreateSurface and that cured that problem for me.

I hope that helps,

Jim
