Hey Guys..

Chris "BeachAV8R" Frishmuth here from over at SimHQ.

I haven't played F4 for a few years..I think the last iteration I played was FF2. Anyway, I write these "Read It - Do It" articles for SimHQ that combine the books we all love to read with the sims we enjoy playing. A sample "Read It - Do It" article is here:

Well, I'm hoping to do one for the book "Raid on the Sun" about the successful strike by the IAF on Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor back in 1981 using their brand new F-16s. So I was wondering what is the feasibility of duplicating that scenario using F4AF and the PMC ODS add-on? I downloaded the ODS add-on and it appeared to install well and fine into my AF install. I fired it up and sure enough, the map is there and everything. It even contains the proper airbase (Ramat David) from where the attack was launched..and even has the Osirak nuclear facility.

BTW - Awesome job on the terrain tiles and general feel of that region. I flew a test hop from Ramat David to Orisak (Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center) and it looks fantastic. I'm really happy it works with F4:AF too because it is so stable..

The problem is - I don't know how to make Tactical Engagements. Well, that isn't entirely true. I managed to find a way to turn the Ramat Airbase to "Blue" while the Osirak facility stayed red. But I haven't populated it with air defenses (I wouldn't know what would be a comparable setup to what might have been there in that day and age). It would also be cool if the whole route was over "red" (enemy) territory so that flying at low altitude the way the Israelis did would be required. Are there any TE's that have already been made that duplicate this raid using the PMC ODS theater?

Also, I don't see any way to make my F-16 an Israeli one in the editor. It doesn't have to be a perfect TE, but if I could get it so that I can duplicate the mission close enough (with fuel being the biggest concern - as was the case in real life)..that would be awesome.

So do you guys have any ideas on how I can pull this together?

I'm pretty familiar with F4..I even have some old training stuff on my website..but I'm clueless on how to get this "Raid On the Sun" mission built..

From my part I can tell that the TE objectives are quite lazily just put in "half red half blue" status because the object placement is still work in progress and each and every time we do new TE objectives file, we need to set the ownership (red vs blue) which is very very time consuming manual task.

However I could do some more detailed painting in that area for you if that helps for creating the TE mission.

I believe other guys in this forum are more capable of helping you out with the basic TE making and F16 skin textures etc.

:) Yeah, when I saw the red/blue line basically bisecting the map I knew that it was pretty much a placeholder...

I might take you up on that. I believe from within the TE I can change the ownership of individual bases and stuff to reflect them being adversaries.

Right on. The depth and breadth of knowledge in the Falcon world is impressive. I'll definitely be taking advantage of some of wizened veterans of Falcon..

Hey..somewhat of a success!

While browsing the forums here at PMC Tactical, I came across this post by 16th Speed: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=22139

I've gotten the mission to run successfully under F4:AF with the PMC ODS theater installed (yay!). Now, I'm also trying to get it to run under FreeFalcon 5.3. Can someone give the Operation Opera mission a try with their FF5.3 install? For some reason, when I try to load the mission I get a CTD every time. I'm just wondering if the mission is incompatible with FF5.3?

The whole theater is for RedViper, I would assume there is all kinds of database etc problems with newer version, sorry.

Roger that. I just got told as much over at the FreeFalcon forums. :D So I guess that mission was made for F4:AF + PMC ODS, but since the databases don't match I can't use it with FreeFalcon 5.3.

Bummer...because it looks like a well crafted TE (it has the F-15 escorts and 2 packages of F-16s, just like the actual mission). Well, at the very least I can fly it with F4:AF..

Thanks for the info and help. I'll get my feet back under me with this whole F4 world again! :D

Hip deep in ArmA2 (as opposed to neck deep in F4, like I used to be). :)

Amazing at the legs F4 has had! She's an old broad, but she still keeps it together. :D
