PMC WRP Demo islands

5 desert islands to demonstrate how huge islands and cities ArmA engine is capable of handling. Are you ready for 204km island?

PMC WRP Demo islands

This is island WRP technology demo for ArmA by WrpTool Development Team. It will contain total of 5 islands which are the following:

PMC desert 51km - 51.2km x 51.2km sized desert island.
PMC desert 102km - 102.4km x 102.4km sized desert island.
PMC desert 204km - 204.8km x 204.8km sized desert island.
PMC Oceanworld - 204km sized area with alot of ocean and few small islands.
PMC Mogadishu - City of Mogadishu Somalia, quite real road network.
Also includes three missions and one campaign configured into the addon pbo.

ArmA v1.07 is required to run this addon, preferably v1.07.5157 (2nd public beta).

These islands are covered with desert terrain and vegetation suited for desert theme. The cities on these islands are huge and populated with ruined buildings to create that war torn feeling (first seen on PMC Rattler island).

Purpose of this release is to demonstrate to the ArmA community of how huge islands and especially cities we are now able to create. The islands arent really finished or "pretty" in a sense, but certainly they can provide enjoyable mission editing environment, especially it would be interesting to test how these terrains work in multiplayer player versus player usage. Mostly these islands miss airport objects and small details like that.

Special thanks go Solus who granted me permission to use this nice desert texture, Deanosbeano, granQ, Smiley_Nick and everyone else who was involved in the WRP stuff, I proceeded this far with inspiration from you guys :)

Tutorials on how to create your own islands or converting old OFP islands to ArmA can be found on our homepage along with other editing material.
Thats covers it pretty good, but I'd like to add that while these islands are "unfinished", they are quite enjoyable and they even include couple of demo missions (how many addons you know without any? eh). The cities are huge, only couple of them include road network and the building locations arent that precise as in other islands, however I enjoy the cities myself at this point (later they can be improved on other islands of course). The Mogadishu city has real road network created from satellite image, the buildings are the war torn burnt buildings and there are some distance between the buildings now so its not that claustrophobic, if there is demand for real hardcore Mog city, I can improve the building positioning and types.

I'm planning on building "final" large desert island for ArmA in theme of PMC Rattler island, most likely candidate for this would be the desert 51km from this PMC WRP Demo release. Also I will plan to create good tutorial how to make islands for ArmA using the existing tools.

Before you download, understand that these are technology demonstration islands, please do not come back complaining if they do not work etc etc. For example the 102 and 204km islands give some errors on arma.RPT file and in some cases cause crash, we have not tracked down why this happens, the 51km island works without any problems. Anyways, just to clear this up.

the 51km island works without any problems
The 51 km island seems to crash my ArmA 1.07.5157 after a few of minutes of flying about (player is only unit on map).

Doesn't ArmA allow us to specify the cell size?

That's great work, Snake. Can't wait to start learning some of this and maybe finally figure out the whole island building thing. Still have some unfinished islands from OFP that I'd like to continue on in ArmA.

Running the same version, got no problems myself.
None of the maps have crashed on me yet.

there are a few reasons for crashes , main one being unkown vertex shader
mainly happening when view distances is 10000 and a plane fires a shed load of ffars ( guess we wait for tools).

yep arma does allow cell size , problem is wrp dosent :(. i think this is the biggest and probably only thing we require to be changed in wrp .
other wise a house at [001,001,0] in wrp at cell size 50 is then changed by config to grid size = 40 and now your house maybe on ah hill and all your town names not where the should be etc.

i have some new info regarding sat textures soon, i had 7 seperate last night and all was well until i added the sea texture . it seems at this moment , unless every texture has a specified cell to be on thats 9 x rvmats in 9 cells and then same again for next 9 etc etc , the whole thing goes tits up.

i shall make a tiny island and try it .

edit : p.s its always helpful that people who have crashes copy and paste the relevant info of why and when from there arma .rpt then we can all try and second guess whats going on :).

I think the crash may well be related to high VD, I was using about 7km to see the island quickly. It crashed 3 times before I reported it here. ArmA.rpt had no mention of any human readable reason for the crash, only some hex style error code.

Dunno why it does that, I have flown around in helo (slow) and harrier (fast) in normal <2000m viewdistances without a problem.

Yes, Sahrani uses 40m cellsize.
ArmA.rpt had no mention of any human readable reason for the crash, only some hex style error code.
As Deanosbeano said, please post any and all arma.RPT errors here so we can track down what kind of stuff ArmA tells us.

I've found these islands have worse performance and crash more frequently with a low terrain detail setting. Changing it to high gives best performance. Very weird :)

directX9.0c Feb 2007 (+/- a month?, i haven't changed anything since I bought ArmA in March)

It is very stable, the only ArmA crashes I ever have are caused by alt-tabbing from windows back into fullscreen ArmA (maybe ~2% of the time), hacks crashing the server, or bad addons (I've been trying to make plenty of them myself too).

I play ArmA at 1024*768 with everything on low, except textures on V.low, no shadows/AA/AF. VD generally around 1800m. I get about 10~30 fps, it's not pleasant but playable, except when in thick forests.


edit:

On PMC 51 km, using VD of 6952m, flying at 1000m with very low terrain detail gives ~11 fps, high gives ~54 fps. On the ground very low terrain detail gives ~13 fps, high gets ~40 fps.

However, using VD 1540m, on the ground with very low terrain gets ~67fps, very high gives ~55 fps. In the air has the same ratio.

The low performance seems to be directly related to the number of displayed blank (single colour) or low-detail (darker texture) terrain segments visible on screen. Higher terrain settings pushes these segments further away from the player, meaning less of them are on screen at any given time.

PS. I encountered a lot of flying buildings at 1000m :)
