Tutorial: DEM to WRP

Post by fogw » 2004-08-02 10:01:06

Hi all!

After some plundering I did a successfull DEM to WRP yesterday.
This tutorial have some requirements. Your island *MUST* exist in real world, and it size must not exceed 52 km * 52 km
In my case my islan is 37 x 37 km ( use the 1024, 52 km island option in WRPTool )

Here is what you need:

-Global Mapper, registered! (keygens available for v5.10!), http://www.globalmapper.com
-a DEM file ( ore similar ) containing your island ( from real life! )
-Wilbur
-WRPtool ( really ? :D )

DEM Sources
SRTM 30 data: http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/
See this image to find your area http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm ... nt_def.gif
USGS NED

Tutorial

Step 1
-Open your downloaded data file into GLOBAL MAPPER. Change projection to ( Tools - Configure - Projection TAB ) UTM, WGS84, METERS and make sure your UTM zone is correct.

Step 2
-go to "File - Export Raster and Elevation Data - Export DEM"
Change Resolution of X and Y axis to 50 m ( the gridsize in WRPTool ).

Step 3
-go to "Export bounds" tab. Press "Draw Box"
Now, here is the tricky part!: now I assume you know what size you island is. Draw a SQUARE box around your island, so that you have some ocean on all sides. Notice your Top left corner Coordinates ( North - West ). are also filled in the next greyed out field called "Corner w/size - Global Projection (UTM - meters )
Choose this option, and do NOT touch the North West coordinates.

Step 4
- Now fill in the "Width" and "Height" fiields according to the WRPtool supported sizes. ( 1024 =51200 meters, 512 = 25600 meters, etc ), so that yor island are covered ( if it is more than 25.6 KM, always use the 51200 meters here )

- Now press OK, and choose a proper filename.

- After the file has exported, you can recheck you got your entire island, by opening your exported DEM back into Global Mapper ( File - Unload All, File - Open Datafile(s) )

- presuming your island is ok now, open the DEM file with Wilbur, and export as said in the WRPtool manual!.

Voila! your island is in WRPtool ready for editing and adding objects!.

Nice... since the USGS has converted to SRTM and NED's, getting ahold of 'classic' DEM's has become much harder. Thanks for the update.

Hmm... the USGS site is not wanting to be friendly. If you don't mind working SDTS data through microDEM you can get that data free from www.mapmart.com and mosaic it together the old fashioned way.

More links:

www.terrainmap.com/rm39.html
www.digitalgrove.net/Links.htm

Those two sites have tons of links and info to boot. On the first one, there are a few interesting links to topo maps (not elev data):

www.nexus.net/~911gfx/sea-ao.html
grunt.space.swri.edu/visit/maps/maps.htm
mapy.mk.cvut.cz/news.htm

The first two have Vietnam AO and official DOD topo maps and resources and links for that stuff, and the third has tons of topos for everything eastern europe and Russia. Good reference material.

What about 3dem? It's a free and easy to use program.
