ODOL Error - Resolved!

Post by Colonel_Klink » 2003-10-28 10:21:36

Ok I know this has been mentioned before, however: I'm experimenting with a couple of my buildings that when importing gives an ODOL error and the true shape of the building is not shown on the map. I have a sneaking suspicion that the issue is not a big deal and that an easy work around can be done. I wil report back here with any progress of findings I make.

Edit: Put MLOD instad of ODOL

Ok this was easier to solve than I first thought. The ODOL error occurs because Binarize cannot do its job correctly if the addon contains named selections that do not have corresponding model parts. i.e. in Named Selections on one of my buildings I had an entry called Stair Rails, but the lod its self had no such part. The reason being that I had created the stair rails and had given them a name. But when I deleted  the actual stair rail parts the named selection remained.. hence the problem. IMPORTANT! It is essential that ALL Named Selections that DONT have a corresponding model part be removed from the named selection box IN EVERY LOD!

Hey that's a good hint!
The funny thing is, that there are even BIS Models which cannot be loaded correctly, but I'll check in this direction ;)

Hmm, I wasn't able to reproduce this error  :-/

Could you send me a very simple p3d, which cannot be loaded by ODOL-Explorer/ WrpTool ?

Similar kinda thing...When I try and use my own custom addons (and modify the objects.ini file) they appear in the Object Browser and can be placed on the map... however, I get no model or icon displayed. The model is there cause you can select it, but without a preview... it's easy to lose stuff.

The addons work fine in the Mission Editor... is there something I'm missing?

P.S. I unPBO'ed my files into the correct path as mentioned in the manual.

For the preview, you would need to make your own custom preview and add a line to icon_images.ini in your 3Dpreview folder. I believe this is covered in the manual.

If you have properly added the entry with a class to the objects.ini file, you should have the appropiate shape zoomed out, and regardless you should have the 3d shape zoomed in on 'real' mode.

Does the P3D file have to be in a particular format? I've made all the changes to the ini files and the object appears in the list (and now I get a preview pic). The problem is... nothing appears on the map in WrpTool when I insert my custom models. Even ODOL_Explorer won't show it!?!?!? It's as if the P3D is empty (but of course it's not)

Check the manual's contact info and send us the P3D model which is not displayed for evaluation. Maybe we can find way to show it.

Thanks Snake_Man... once again this problem is user error. I forgot to Binarize my addon! The P3D file was in MLOD format (straight from O[sup]2[/sup]) not ODOL format.

Thanks once again for a speedy response!

I'll try and catch you out next time :)

P.S. You might wanna change the documentation to say "MLOD models don't work!" or something like that?

Ah nice to hear that you got it working.

Yes the latest manual which has not even reached beta testers hands yet contains the notes about ODOL and MLOD formats and instructs that WrpTool does not read MLOD.

Ok... this isn't directly related the orignal topic, but... Now I've managed to get my addons in WrpTool (and onto my island) they no longer seem to be animated? They work fine when placed in the mission editor but just refuse to behave when they get added via WrpTool. Even more bizare... the objects don't seem to belong to the correct class anymore i.e. they behave like Buildings, not Barrels or Targets.

Most of the addons have animated doors or moving parts which are actived like the doors on some of the RES houses.

Is there something I should know about placing objects in WrpTool? Perhaps something missing from the Models Config file?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks again :)

That effect comes from non set named properties in the p3d file.

Name = class
Value (eg.) = house

and the animiations should work on editor and island placed models !

Just a bit of a rehash of the original topic here.
In the past week or so I have made several new models that for some reason or other (other than the problem as resolved above) neither WrpTool or ODOL_Explorer will view properly. I am not sure the exact reason, but in one case I had some double faces on an object in a view lod, and when fixed the adoon was able to be viewed.
I have checked the read out from binarize and in each instance there have been no problems with the binarize process.

Lester provided me with a rather small MLOD model which shows such an error, so I hope to find the problem tonight.

UPDATE: Found the bugs. ;D will be solved in next version

Just another thing I noticed on this issue. If more than one object is part of a named selection Wrptool doesn't load them. Joining the objects resolved this, but that isn't always possible if the parts are part of an animation.

Please have this up asap

I have a large multipart building that loads ok in the ODOL Explorer but does not show its 3d shape.

Is there anything I can do to fix it (already checked for named nothings).
