Documentation ie VTE manual

Post by Snake Man » 2007-11-08 23:54:48

Elsewhere this was bit offtopic so it was time to open new topic for documentation / manual stuff.

Hanky said:
I have also started to work on the Readme PDF. So far I have an Installation, Troubleshooting, Changelog, and Information Library sections. Are there any sections that you would like me to add or possibly remove (probably the Troubleshooting one could go)? Maybe a history of the VTE project?

Also: If you want a history of the VTE project I am going to need a basic synopsis of it I wasnt around during the OFP days so I have no Idea about that.
As for the thick PDF manual I dont think the changelog would be appropriate as its evolving all the time, it would be merely a text file in the docs directory. Installation and troubleshooting are good ones, so many people have problems using MOD dirs and so on. library section, yeah we could dupe the ingame libraries in there with pictures, also this would be somehow a history lesson as I really want VTE to educate people or kind of keeping the Vietnam War memory alive. So we definitely are going to need some sort of overview of the war and then perhaps descriptions of the most important battles etc. I actually have few good docs about such battles.

The ingame images for the manual are tricky one at least in the short term as the content are to be change maybe even dramatically in the future as we improve models and textures. It would look dorky to have manual with pictures of ugly models in it.

Also some mission editing stuff regarding VTE would be good to have. No beginner stuff or tutorials, but specific VTE scripts and how to use default NVA/VC and South Vietnam flags etc.

Vietnam Overview

Post by TC-Roland » 2007-11-14 04:42:22

When TC was 100% Vietcong, I was asked to write a few pages about the Vietnam war to go on the TC homepage. However, as I started writing, I realised you couldn't leave out x,y,z, in order to paint the full picture. It got longer and longer. Anyway I never got round to finishing it. It covers from 300BC to midway through the French Indochina War (not even got to Dien Bien Phu). I have never had the time to finish it, as I know I would never be satisfied until it was a book.

I you guys want to carry on where I left off, I will send you my progress so far. I don't mind, as It's nice to share it with other like-minded people.
When I checked, some of the pictures have been slightly corrupted, but thats what Google Images is for lol :D

Anyway, to make my point, you simply can't begin to understand the Vietnamese people and how the worlds largest superpower lost the war with them, until you appreciate their history.

If you are interested in my work-in-progress-halted, let me know.

Dunno really as I always install my software where I please, not to the c:\program files\ directory. However at least I think its called \Armed Assault\ and not Combat Operations.

Well yes sure I think we could take a look at it.

Have you got the OFP VTE v0.4 and its documents directory? There is some text which we definitely need in the manual, like basic rundown on units and class names (of course some weapon classnames have changed a bit now, especially all magazines).

Hmm do you really mean the next release, or did you miss the pre-alpha 11-23-07 release the day before?

Yes I mean the next release. Well I guess we could redistribute or have the manual for download when I do get it done. The first version is going to have just the weapons and vehicles in the library, and then later an overview of the war and information on the units that fought and of course any new weapons and vehicles that are added.

HOORAY The first version of the VTE Readme PDF/Nam Bible is done. Like the VTE mod itself this document will go through stages of development with new information being added when it is researched. There are a few weapons that I could not find any pertinent information on their role in Vietnam so they either have generic information or no information. This is where you the VTE community comes in.

Do you know alot about a particular gun, tank, plane etc. Well write up some information on it and I will more than likely add it to the Nam bible. This is far too much research for me to thoroughly do on my own. My main point of research for all weapons, armor, etc was how it effected the soldiers who used them on the battlefield not boring technical stats (granted some of the stuff does have boring stat stuff but that is due to my limited sources at the moment, 1 book and wikipedia is it.) If you want me to add technical stats that is fine and I will do that for you.

Anyways download the PDF, read it, write stuff for it, critique it but at the very least learn something about Vietnam!

Excellent stuff. Yeah too fine print technical manual is not good, we need some real life historical info about the units, vehicles and gear so for example mission makers can get ideas or real life data out of them.

Few things I noticed;

Perhaps the official VTE font should not be used in the main text, but only on menu headers and such. But I have no clue about this, my artistic talent is zero. I just found the manual to be bit difficult to read now with the current font (but who knows, might be my PDF viewer or settings too).

The M16A1 image is with 30 round magazine, I think it should be with the 20 round magazine instead.

The C-130 and MC-130 texts were mixed (and/or that there is no C-130 text heh).

But in all and all, the manual is excellent. Looking at the authentic NAM pictures in it gets you really in the NAM mood, very good work. :)

Well the main VTE font is only being used for headers and stuff, it proved to be unreadable at smaller font sizes. I will switch all of the non-header text to a more legible font.

And thanks for the mirror Aussie Dave!

Plans for the next version of the PDF manual:

1. Have some sort of text/information for all entries.

2. Some sort of overview of the Vietnam Conflict.

3. Lingo glossary of terms and slang that developed during the war.

Any news on the manual?

We are getting closer to final alpha release and I would like to have top notch documentation for it. I've been thinking about the normal PDF method as well as online documentation through wiki type system. Any ideas and comments are welcome.

I've been thinking a lot of that online wiki manual for VTE and other PMC projects. It now seems like a really good idea, good enough that I already started to put together some kind of manual.

Please post any ideas you have what we need in the documentation.

- a complete list of all classnames and a short description, nothing fancy, like
(just an example, the periods are just placeholders to make it align threadlike somehow)

Aircraft
...
...Helicopter
......CH47 Classes
.........VTE_CH47A - CH-47 Cargo lifter Helo -
...........- {VTE_CH47A ammoclasses}
(, with links to a list with other units using same or carrying this as ammocargo(its a wiki after all, should be simple)...

...

Mines
VTE_M18A1 - M18 Antipersonnel, directional Mine - (remote and tripwire)
...

etc...

something like that maybe with a index, since there are soo many good stuff inside..

VTE online manual can be found here. Its on very early stages, mostly I've just throw few things in there, for example I haven't taken anything from this topic etc.

All help on improving manual would be much appreciated.

Seems dead yeah, I'll investigate.

Edit: issue has been fixed. If you still cant get it to load, use your browsers Refresh page button (repeatedly) and it should work fine.

Please don't hesitate to point out errors, confusing or missing data in the manuals. I want to have all the necessary info there with easy to read format, I don't think I'm there yet :o

Snake,
I'm happy to help with the manual on Australian Units in Veitnam.

Just some small points, The Special Air Service in Australia is known as the SASR (SAS Regiment). Also The RAN and RAAF provided transport support and gunfire (Navy) support.

Anyway just suggestions not important really.

Do you think I should change the ingame units "AU SAS" to "AU SASR" then?

No either leave as is or change it to SASR with a note for the great unwashed so they understand.

Do you want me to list the Aussie units and tour dates?

Yes please.

Naturally the information would be good to have some reference for mission maker, if not else than to set the mood for good mission. Yes I want the manual to be history lesson for youngsters, but we should try to bring in some content for mission makers.

Basically VTE is a mod for ArmA, a game addon, however I have learned so much about Vietnam war by developing VTE that I want the same experience be seen by others, this would be nice manual with historic facts and details, nice ingame library texts with short but well written descriptions of stuff (unit, weapon, vehicle etc). I want to preserve the memory of the war within the mod, I don't want VTE to be just another shoot 'em up frag fest without any deeper meaning.
