Triangles or more shapes 3DS model?

Post by JanHas » 2009-10-30 15:00:49

Hi,

I'm currently working on a new C-130H model that I want to import into F4 with LE. Can LE only handle triangle poly's when importing a 3ds model? If I try to import a model with square's it says "unknown node type reached". I have seen tank models in F4 that use square poly's.. were those created in LE or imported into F4. Or is there a way to combine 2 triangle poly's into a square poly? Can any one help me clarify this or point me into the right direction.

update -> SOLUTION!! USE UVW UNWRAP (modifier list) AND GIVE IT A SKIN. "EXPORTING SELECTED" and importing into LE works.

Hi JH.

LE can convert 3ds file, triangle polys into lod format. just use the right version of LE

first, make a small, simple model, export in 3ds format. then try your LE conversion.

if your model has high poly count.. LE won't be able to convert it. reduce it down to less than 20000 polys, better within 10000 polys, may work.

My model is below 10.000.

But what you are saying is that only triangle polys can be imported?

yes.

try export your model in 3ds again. remove all texture-mapping info. then try different versions of LE.

if no go , send me the 3ds.

I can import my model after I re-triangulate it but then I have to get rid of more details because off higher poly count. The 3ds model has a lot of square polys.

I have another question..
In LE I see tank models that are build of square polys. How is this done? Are these models created in LE or can the polys be combined into one?

Hi JanHas,
you have to attach all parts of your model to one model then convert the model to poly and use the export selected function.
within Lodeditor you do not have to care to much weather the model is made of tri's or quads. The time when it was necessary to make the model as small as possible is a way over and besides your grafics card will convert the quads to tris anyway. But if you really want to look for wavydaves Node fuser tool.

Regarding the square nodes on tanks,
if tank models are default MPS falcon4 lods, they are created with special 3d tool inside MPS team.
the tank/ground vehicles later created by 3rd party are done in Lodeditor or 3ds max. their triangle nodes are fused by hands, in LE. or later use WD's node fusing tool. The fusing operation takes extra work :!: , all simply for lower the polycount, to speed up FPS (for old exe).

BTW..just curious, your new C130 is for ...OF? or new BMS?

I have done a small test object and when I import the 3ds model into LE, LE stops working. The steps I do are below. The convert to poly step (roll menu) I normally do with right mouse button and "convert to editable poly". Makes no difference right?

CCC; can you tell me how to fuse nodes by hand. This way I can eliminate 5000+ faces..

The model is for OF, but when the new BMS is released I can adjust it..

Reason: please dont hotlink very large (file size) images. 100kb per image is ok, 300kb is not.

i use WD's node fusing tool. you must convert into lod format first, then you can use WD's tool.
