Objectives file from DEM2Terrain

Post by Sherlock » 2007-04-22 21:16:43

Snake Man,
when you first produce the L2/O2 from DEM2Terrain for theaters, I was wondering what your rules file looks like? Is it the default one that comes with DEM2Terrain, i.e., :

I seem to have identical rules.obr in my Dem2terrain directory, didn't check the individual IDs but I'm pretty sure its just the same.

I cant recall the history and how it goes, but certainly Iran was created with this setup, but how was the objectives done for the other theaters I cannot be certain. I mean, did I use older Dem2terrain version which didn't have such rules.obr or something. I just cant recall that small info now.

Should we be able to identify the theaters objectives by looking at them, whether they are created with this config file or with TCL script (I remember we used TCL before) or even with the infamous village util?

Is this "identical rules.obr" the one you use when you run DEM2Terrain?

Actually, I was more interested in how you did Iran specifically now that you bring it up. This is because you said in the other thread "that's the way DEM2Terrain does it" and I am trying to get down to the bottom of why there were no "TOWN" Objectives produced. I ***THINK*** it is because of the ruleset you are using but until I can see it I can't tell for sure. Can you post the ruleset (if different from the default shown above) so I can review it please?

I haven't done a one for one review but the heavy evidence seems to suport that at least the majority of the objective CT#s/OCDID#s have remained the same across the different versions. Don't get me wrong I know there are examples of differences, e.g., any airbase CT# in AF greater than 3095 (OCDID# greater than 3195) is unusable because all the PD/PHD data has been erased for them. But I think those models are still used in RV and OF (Anyone please confirm or deny this with a quick check in LODEditor).

BTW, the TCL script I've found for creating objectives doesn't create the cities, towns, airbases or villages. The one I've located here at PMC was entitled "create.pak.objectives.tcl" (formerly called PAK ADDER). It creates SAM Sites, Army Bases, Depots, Headquarters and Radar Stations. The Cities, Towns, Villages and Airbases seemed to only be able to come from DEM2Terrain process...unless you know something I don't (which is very possible! :) )

If you are using the default rules obr file I posted above (first post) then it is written to not create any towns because of the way the city.tdf file works.

This is truncated, of course, but you get the idea. All that is in the output csv file is nonames, radar and airbases.

So, somewhere, something must be different Snake Man ? Unless I misunderstood your above ? I understood you to say that the default obr rules file I posted in the first post was the one you used to create Iran....

Apparently you have to specificly load the obr file to work, I never done that so it generates the default csv file then.

Ahh! Ok, I don't think I've ever tried it that way. Let me give it a whirl and see what I get.

Something about it, Sherlock? My own without-obr run gives me nothing but Factories and Airports. I think it is good to explore your way. We could obtain plenty of beautiful objectives nearly (job-)free.

I want to explore this thing too, because we only have cities and villages this way, not towns.

I tried it the way that SM described and I got the same thing he did (and which you did also). Here is one I recently did for Allied Force that produces tons of objectives (probably too many; I went through and deleted those I did not want) but on the other hand it is easier to delete than it is to create objectives.

Wow that config looks good, so it creates too many villages and such things or did you refer to the additional stuff for airbases for example?

I was referring to the additional stuff. It creates the villages, towns, and cities properly (based on the DCW data). It's the refineries, factories, Army Bases, etc., that I was referring to having too many of and having to go back through and selectively delete many of them.

The only drawback in this whole process that I see is that there are so many "NoNames" in the DCW data for towns and villages. It's a two-edged "sword" using the "IgnoreNoNames 1" command. If you use it you don't have to deal with the "NoNames" but it can cut out some important towns or villages that you will need to add back in manually later. If you don't use it then you have to deal with the multitude of "NoNames" in the town and village data.
