Upgrading CATE to work with 4 Byte terrains

Post by Sherlock » 2007-01-20 00:17:33

As I understand it (I am not a programmer), CATE (Configurable Auto-Tiling Enhancer), programmed by SkyFire76, was written in Visual Basic and only will work on the older format 2-Byte terrains (L2/O2).

Is there anyone (programmers) who would like to upgrade it to work with 4 Byte terrains? Source code is available.

Thanks.

Since we have util to convert 2byte to 4byte and the CATE work always starts (on my experiments at least) from the raw Dem2Terrain created L2 file, then what is the main focus of having it 4byte?

To do all Tile work on the 4 byte so the conversion would be unnecessary after the first time (less risk too I would think) and...if in the future we find a way to use higher res terrain data (SRTM) we can move it direclty to 4Byte and bypass DEM2Terrain....just thinking out loud..

Plus, I've had opportunity occassionally to need to go back and redo some tiling on a 4 byte terrain but didn't have the 2 byte anymore.
