Simulated Korea war-1950 screenshots

Post by ccc » 2009-12-16 16:28:32

Based on a roughly edited DB and DoctorX's 1959 korea campaign, here come some screenshots..for fun.

3d toys are old ones, bugs are nailed to some extent. loadouts remain untouched.

The opening of DoctorX's 1959 campaign.. jets lite up, bombers heading north.

Alright..two zips for FF4/RV modders. Hope the files work.

First, backup your [objects] folder in C:/Microprose/falcon4/terradata. the folder size is about 400+mb.

This 9+mb zip contains new skins for new models. The dds number starts from 4000. just drop it in
C:/Microprose/falcon4/terradata/objects/KoreaObj folder, to add new skins or overwrite old skins.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/mmzyhmii4n5/KoreaObj.zip

This 57+mb zip contains edited files in C:/Microprose/falcon4/terradata/objects. just drop it there to overwrite old files. Honestly i don't know what files have been edited.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/iedmzhjrkde/objects.zip

oop.. sorry i don't know there's an official release format

sorry, i think the zips are unofficial, exclusively for serious FF4/RV modders..so the file preparation is rough and the distribution is limited. Experienced FF4/RV modders should know what i wrote..well, i think only few interested.

The standard FF4/RV install in you PC like this..

C:/Microprose/falcon4/terradata/objects

in this [objects folder], there's a [KoreaObj folder] holding all DDS skins.

my first zip, 9mb, is to add skins to [KoreaObj folder].
my second zip, 57+mb, is to overwrite the rest old files in [object folder].

BTW.. to check if new toys working in you install, check TacRef first.. see if F-100D turn into a F-86F.. etc

That is no excuse to do low quality release. How long time would it make you to name "objects.zip" to "CCC_Korea_War_1950_Objects.zip" instead?

The point is that when you name your archives ... well in fact you DONT name them at all, then it just causes confusion and difficulties for users to store, handle and use those archives. If you release two or more updates like this... how are the users be able to tell the difference of this and the other release?

Well, at least you didn't put spaces in the file names so that's a good thing :)

Wow, very nice. I will try it. I just wonder that there are any helicopters like H-5, H-13, H-19 or H34... in there? That would be great. Thank you CCC.

only H-5 (replace UH-1) added in this mod.

my test in past days showed..using this mod in TE or DoctorX's 1959 campaign, i experienced minor hiccups/FPS drop in external view/ac flying-by. In highly populated scenes, i encountered several freezes. As i just replaced LOD1 with new models, the freezes are probably due to data overflow while loading/switching between LOD1 models/skins and the rest lower LODs. Even so, i still completed some campaign missions with no freeze. Well, for fun i created few TEs with many new ac model flying together, so i can fly and check them easily..in this case, i did encounter one freeze.

few more flights in 1959 campaign last night..no CTDs. Though falcon AI and FM are not that good at pure gun fighting, i witnessed ten more ac - F86/mig - mixed in a knife fight, plus flights of B29 flying by the scene at high altitude.. :D

Dogfight near US carrier, a mig15 was chasing a F9F2. the mig was downed few seconds later.
Image
Then i landed on the carrier..well.. acutally "hover" on the deck. The bug is due to incorrect ac gear position values and carrier deck height.

more campaign flights and the freeze came back.. it said " buffer overrun" after CTD.. the bug seems inherent and accumulative, so, two or three flights, exit the sim to flush the memory, then back to fight.

Another furball.. as most ac use gun in 1959 campaign, the tempo of aircombat is much slower than AAM-era.. it took a while to shoot down ac.

again, naplam type weapon is the most powerful weapon in this campaign.

I spent more time on this "model-replaced" 1959 campaigns these days..my focus is intercepting bombers and dropping naplam on FLOT.

To my surprise, the situation looks pretty good.. ON Day2, i received three event reports : first, Blue started major offensive, second, Russia joint the war, and the third, Blue repel DPRK invasion. On the 2d map, blue force at west coast launched amazing offensive into Heiju pak, captured four AFBs! At East coast, blue force moved north along the coast, also captured one or two AFBs. the middle section of FLOT is tight, no blue advancing so far.. but red units were retreating to set up defence line. My first 1959 campaign test was dropped on Day 9 due to poor, bleak situation..now this new test looks really promising.

Again, as blue ground forces capture more red AFBs, the pressure from Red airpower is lowered.. and turns into a positive cycle. i noted Red air acitvities lowered to minimal at west coast area, while East coast area suffered a lot from Russia airpower! Tu-95 bombers shut down some blue AFBs, made it harder and harder to intercept them.. no nearby CAP fighter available, or just too far to highjack one for use.

BTW, i encountered freezes or no-screen-loaded-in-3d-world more frequently near buzy FLOT. the only solution is exit, then re-enter. thanx to my new pc and win7, it won't take long to enter the 3d world.

No pic but.. I win  The campaign ended on Day 5 0200, Blue side captured P'yongyang.

Compared with my previous test report..i can not believe this campaign mod is winnable.
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=21668

imo the key to win is actively interceptnig red bombers, to keep blue AFB operational, then doing CAS job in the meantime. The first two campaign days i flew AA missions to intercept bombers/attackers, the move saved most blue AFBs at west coast area..with these AFBs blue forces got CAS support and preserved a lot main force. Once FLOT stablized, blue force started major offensive on Day 2 and started to capture red AFBs - which further reduced Red air activities, made blue air power could do more AG job, a positive cycle in the end.

As i mentioned in previous post, once AFB disabled, it took 2-3 day to resume operational. i lost most east coast AFBs on Day 2 due to CIS Tu95.. and all those AFBs remained inoperational till the campaign ended..thanx to the brave blue ground units at East coast, they made aggressive advance to Wonsan under minimal air cover. As i stablizing the fighting at West/middle FLOT, i shifted my CAS job to Wonsan area, just in time to catch the hot fighting there. Once Wonsan fell, all advancing ground forces converged toward P'yongyang and ended the war easily.

hmm.. it should be a screenshot thread but turns out to be a campaign play.. with eyecandies.

fight for Red side.. On Day 2, DPRK captured Seoul.

Red ground force launched major offensive along three routes too - west to Seoul, middle to Choongwon, and East along the coast. All spearheads did great job.. they encountered strong blue resistance, but i highjacked flights to help.. russian/chinese CBU type weapon is my choice.

As usual, once Red started to captured Blue AFBs and army bases, ground forces suffered less from air raids.

the win condition is capturing Seoul and Pusan.. well, it seems to be a looong way to reach Pusan..and Red ac are so short-leg, make CAS/BAI job harder as spearheads moving further south.

Alright, the war ended on Day5 1710, DPRK finally captured Pusan !
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n192 ... pussan.jpg

It took Red ground forces 3 days to reach the SE corner of korean pennisula.. during the fight, i spent most time on Seoul area..Blue has strongest defence there, and kept sending ground units trying to recapture Seoul. Also there're hot fighting at East coast and middle route/choongwon-chonju area. As Red side ac are mostly short-leg type, it makes CAS/BAI support harder at southern part of ROK land..only bombers and one type of attacker can reach there.. not to mention the even shorter-legged AA fighters. Since Blue side lost most ground units in the battles defending Seoul-chonju-Choongwon, Red ground units could count on themselves and reached Pusan in the end.

i noted Red artillery unit is quite useful against Blue airdefnece units. When Red army approaching Pusan, the only Blue units left were AD units.. just too far and dangerous for air support/SEAD. Then artillery units kept engaging AD units and finally wiped out all of them.

At last stage of war, Blue side only operated three AFBs..intermittently. My last mission over one of them, found a F9F taking off from repaired runway..i dived to shoot but..he's really good and survived.
