Altitude displaying in Afghanistan theater

Just wondering; is the altitude reading in the Afghanistan theater relative to mean sea level? I discovered this when crashing into the ground when the altimiter displayed about 5500 ft... I have not experienced this in the Korean theaters. There the altidude is relative to the ground. Anyone have the same experiences?
