I'll probably start doing my ONC magic on nevada soon.
Any 2048x2048 clean map available?
Sam as this one, but in 2048

Yes I have that on high res (ie original bmp from Terrainview). However its backuped on my dvdr and theres been queue to be restored some other theater images that I could update our web page, so when I restore them, I can send this image to you also.

You should remind me later though if it doesn't appear within week or two :)

Well sure, but I still have not got around to restore my F4 stuff from backups. I still read daily my TODO about the theater images for web page. I'll surely let you know when the image is restored.

Finally the F4 TODO list annoyed me too much so I got all of them done at once (see the theater page updates) and I also restored from backups the bitmaps. I have put the Nevada and Taiwan (derStef requested it) on the same packet to easy my uploading process. Grab them here.

Red Dog you requested 2048 Nevada bitmap, well I have no such image. Nevada is 64 segment theater so its 1024x1024 in size, terrainview as well as CATE saves the bitmap as 1024x1024 resolution. So what you see in the rar above is what you're getting, you need to resize it up yourself, of course this wont keep high res nature etc.

Only theaters where you get "native" 2048x2048 image are 128 theaters. The 256 theater gets you 4096x4096 image.

Sorry that I didn't figure that out earlier when I first replied to this topic.

If you need more details, we can make CATE bitmap out of it. If you recall the work we did earlier, I need the elevation data and which RGB values you want to be used etc.

Detailed highmap
The fastest and the most easy way is to merge L2 and O2 file and create L2m file. After import into Photoshop (as raw data) you will get detailed grayscale image.
You can blend your new image with your colored map.

ok Luk,

Anyone able to do that for me? I can do with the photoshop raw data, but as I don't have Nevada files handy for now ...
Also is there a current kneemap somewhere? I need to pinpoint the location of airbases to continue work on this

I dont have Nevada theater in my computer. I dont have place for install at the moment. But I can download it and "uniextract" L2 and O2 files from exe. I have wet concrete beside house and have to fabricate it. Perhaps after about 2-3 hours I can try to prepare something for you.

BTW :I hope, I will be able to extract files from exe. Sometimes it is imposible.

And I have a problem right now. This link does not work (Download PMC_Nevada_Theater_v0.5_RC1.rar - 45mb.). I would download AF compatibile version rather.

Outstanding Luk
Any chance to get that highmap with no compression? in BMP or tif maybe. It helps as I see I miss some lower elevation area a bit there and there in my map

Many thanks for the effort

The PNG file is compressed. But PNG compression is without loose of information. I can not get better grey-range by this "RAW import" technique.

Of course there is a possibility to get some 16bit per channel greyscale image. I was able to do it about 2 years ago in Eu theater. I did not use F4 utilities.
I used freeware called "3DEM". I used it many times and had problems with projection. But during my perhaps last try I ran about one or two days old version. It was totally fresh subversion just released. There was chooseable the same projection, dem2terrain uses. I was able to get the 16bit-geotiff of theater, perfectly matched F4 map. I think it was the last release of this software. About 3/4 year ago they have closed the website and soft is no more supported.
BTW: above mentioned process is quite complicated. But the result has "terrain processing" resolution - I mean the quality is higher then your monitor abilities. It would be fine, you will be satisfied with just this PNG for map appearance purposes :mrgreen: (I know posted PNG has worse colour range than monitor, becouse is indexed - mean max 256 colours only :? )
I hope you can uderstand what I write. My English is quite poor even for shopping purposes... :oops:

ok luk, I understand. I'll try to make do with the above one. I'll never get the nice detailled ravines I see there on my map, but I can live without.
Many thanks anyway

This should be the easiest way:

note - with this utility you should get detailed highcolor image with good borders (works with already cropped theater data)
(previous mentioned 3DEM export is difficult - you must find GPS borders and crop exported data)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LxNormalFix
------------

LxNormalFix is a multi-purpose utility.
- Fixes the shading normals in the Theater.Lx files, giving realistic terrain shading.
- (Optional) Changes the selected terrain LOD level file (Terrain.L?) elevation to those in a
greyscale BMP or MultiGen DED format file. Recalculates the normals for the new elevations.
- (Optional) Replace terrdata\Terrain\Theater.Lx elevations using another Theater.Lx file.
- (Optional) Generate an Elevation Data File (compressed ~= 8 MB) from hirez Theater.L0 file.
- (Optional) Use Elevation Data File to update elevation in all Level files (L0 - L5).
- (Optional) Save Theater.L0 elevations to a L0 Elevations Data File. (Quick save).

//==========================================
// Commandline Context
//---------------------
// No commandline parameters: Calculate normals for all terrain LOD files (Terrain.Lx).
//
// format: $LP @[Theater Name] @[theater path] Lead Pursuit F4-AF version
//
// format: @[Theater Name] @[theater path] for ODS512, @Operation @C:\Falcon4\DesertStormTheaterAddon\terrdata
// e.g., @Balkans @C:\Falcon4\terrdata\Balkans
//
// format: ~Save ~ <">[path\Savefilename]<"> ({path} File name to save L0 elevations.
// If no path, file in current folder)
//
// format: ~Replace=x ~ <">[path\Lxfilename]<"> ({path} File name with Lx elevations. Same file format as
// Theater.Lx. Use .Lx extension for source file. .Ox file
// with same name must be present
// If no path, files in current folder)
//
// format: ~Update ~ <">[path\Savefilename]<"> ({path} File name of save L0 Elevations Data File.
// Use Theater.L0 saved data as base for calculating all levels (0 - 5) (use for installer)
//
// format: ~Elev=<->[LOD level (0-5)] [minElev - not below(meters)] [maxElev - for map(meters)]
// [SW latitude (dec.deg.)] [SW longitude (dec.deg.)]
// ~ <">[path\DEDfilename]<"> (MultiGen DED file or BMP)
//
// format: ~ElevSave=<->[LOD level (0-5)] [minElev - not below(meters)] [maxElev - for map(meters)]
// [SW latitude (dec.deg.)] [SW longitude (dec.deg.)]
// ~ <">[path\DEDfilename]<"> (MultiGen DED file or BMP)

// ~ <">[path\Savefilename]<"> ({path} File name to save L0 elevations.
// If no path, file in current folder)
//==========================================

Example:
Shortcut Target box:
"C:\F4Utilities\LxNormalFix.exe" ~Elev= 0 200 2656 33.84375 123.0 ~I:\Temp\korea-Falcon.bmp

1st parameter = The 6 terrain LOD files (x = 0 - 5, Terrain.Lx).
If LOD level is negative, then the levels from L0 to Lx will be processed.
2nd parameter = Elevations (feet) less than this value are not changed.
3nd parameter = The theater's maximum elevation (feet).
4th parameter = The theater's lower-left latitude (dec. deg.).
5th parameter = The theater's lower-left longitude (dec. deg.).
======
"C:\F4Utilities\LxNormalFix.exe" ~Elev= 0 200 2656 33.84375 123.0 ~I:\Temp\korea-Falcon.bmp ~HirezElev.dat

Same as above.
6th parameter = Save L0 elevations to this Elevation DataFile File.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried various syntaxes and parameters in the past (about 100x in last 2 years), but without effect.
I hope you are better in command line...(please send the result here - I am very interested in it!)

GOOD LUCK
Luk
P.S. Perhaps I am just quite stupid and can not understand to manual. Dont know which symbol have to substitute or delete.... @-( <)>][~$ ?????

How do you merge L2 and O2 file to create L2m file? I need a grayscale image to help with terrain elevations.
