Screenshot "gallery" work in progress (very beta)

Post by Snake Man » 2001-03-12 14:48:00

I thought you guys would like to see whats up with the theater at this moment so now there is temporary directory for screenshots I've been taking.

This is very much work in progress and remember its very beta. If you look the dates of these images, you can see progress being made for example in the fartiles right here in this first series of screenshots! Image

The images in dir can change very fast, so if you want to be up to date, keep on checking this dir often.

There are screenshots now with the new ocean tile. Also some new rivertiles, which arent too blending yet. They still stand out in the terrain way too much.

Latest batch of screenshots are taken from the terrain with new lightcolor road tiles and without river tiles.

We discussed about rivers in desert terrain, if we would remove all small rivers and only tile those large rivers like Tigris etc.

As there is not much other sand types tiled in the Kuwait area and new road tiles are so blending, the terrain looks pretty boring indeed Image

Let me know what you guys think.

Well you have to remember that these guys are living in small adobes and single story houses. The sandy hue is taken from a satellite view of the streets of arab cities.

T-Bone, your new HCAPSFC mountain tile screenshots are there.

To me, they dont look too hot as the actual terrain is pretty flat on there. Meaning the difference between hforr20* <> hcapsfc* is pretty mimimal.

But surely they look good with higher elevations.

Some screenshots added from my flight on the 128 campaign with eFalcon v1.09 - the shots are poor quality (someone give me some details of how to make good ones, reasonable size of course).

Widowmaker made very good job with fartiles, thanks.

I have a question: why must you insist upon using the same desert texture that was intended for sparse use as a generic desert tile such as in this picture... http://www.pmctactical.org/f4/temp_dese ... _14_10.JPG

This obviously takes away from the realism ya know... so why is it like this?

I guess this is because this is an alpha shoot now worrie Image
These backgroundtiles can be randomly replaced easily assoon as road/rivers/transtion are laid down.

no sweat

Because it was automatically tiled by Spherical Converter. I am not planning on releasing the theater with that kind of tiling. Thats just how spherical converter does elevation tiling, I wanted to have the option of changing tiles based on elevation lateron.

And like Widowmaker said, this is not even beta yet.

Also, I also found out that you can automatically create randomness by replacing on type of elevation tile's offset number with those of many generic tiles by separating the offsets by commas. This should speed things up in tiling the Iranian Mountains.

wow. the Arp 18 update shots looks much better! scattered green bushes..better distribute them in various density.
suppose these tiles belong to desert-mountain transition area? i remember some topgun pics over Arizona look like this. As for pure desert, some wavy dunes work fine.

These small bushes will have several generic densities to reduce reptitiveness. They also enhance the sensation of speed Image

T-Bone,
I'm really looking forward to this Map.. I was wondering how much info you guys have to work from with regards to deployment of Coalition and Iraqi AC, Ground Units, High Value Targets etc....

I may have access to some non classified stuff regarding the Gulf.

Just an observation, the view of the Gulf (Saudi near Kuwait in Particular) from 20K feet looked like a beige pool table with some stains on it Image

The terrains color was VERY "Water Dependant" The agricultural irrigation produced dramatic circular patches of green (Arc of the giant sprinkler) That would be clustered about. Also, areas around rivers were more likely to have some vegetation whereas the rest of the place from the air was barren.

The Sand Berms along the Kuwait border were pretty dramatic, as were the infantry bunker complexes that were scattered all over the border. If you want pictures of the Iraqi airfields I know I can get you alink where they are available...

I'd love to see a very accurate "Gulf War" campaign at least in terms of the deployment and aircraft set.. I'll see if I can digitize some actual video I have of an F16 sortie in the Gulf..it shows just how plain the terrain was, but it was "Random" with no visual "quilt" pattern that happens with the auto tiling..

On a plus side, the open areas should be a snap to cover in a hurry if you generate some prefab large tile clusters then blend the edges Image

Lets first clear some stuff up.
1.) I am not working on the ODS campaign, Snakeman is.
2.) I am working on a future Iran campaign.
3.) I am the main artist doing the tiles.

So basically, though ODS/ME have the same terrain, if you want info on the 1990 Gulf War scenario, ask Snakeman.

I plan on making those circle farm paterns in the future and we have found a way to get rid of the quilt patterns... any further input is welcome.

Hi there. Well are you still interested of getting us some target data and aircraft placement for Desert Storm Theater?

Also the video material of the desert terrain would be much appreciated.
