some nice sat images

Post by kinggeorge » 2003-01-10 13:56:00

thx to gargoyle i found some nice huge sat images of iran iraq on http://www.digitalglobe.com/

gallery - iran iraq sites

I should try to make some 512 tiles from them...

Do 512 textures lead to low fps or stuttering if applied to the whole terrain? Any experiences?

Thanks I love those huge images, I have 770mb of sat images leeched from the NASA site, very cool.

Afghanistan Theater is only 512 res tiles. I did not see any low fps on it, yeah it might effect, but I didn't notice anything worth mentioning.

Aaah, maybe someday... ODS 512 res tiles! ;)

I've resized some of them in proper scale and saved it as 2048 pixel squares (16 times 512's) - some in 512x512.
The hard work is the transitions and the n8 lightning i guess.
How do i get the last 5 colors out of the image so it doesnt randomly distribute the n8 lightning pixels?

I'll use paintshoppro for this. When the image is 256 colors you change the 252-255 to white then save the color palette. Then close the image but do not save it. Reload the image and load the saved color palette. Done, now it should have the original look but the 252-255 is white.

However if you want to have night lighting in that image, then I don't know. I've never yet done those.

Well with a couple of more guys knowing how to use psp or photoshop or having good sat image resources i guess it could go pretty fast making most of the "mainstream" ods textures...

Well if you arrange us some nice satellite images from middle east cities :)

Do you have any satellite images which you could use to make tiles now?

We are making some research which satellite images could provide best; irrigated farmland, rough grazing, pastures, arable land and woodland/forest.

Could you try to make some city tiles from satellite images? If you don't have any I have here kuwait, baghdad and some other cities what we could use.

Would be cool if someone helped :D

1st get in the newnet theater irc channel #falcon4theaters ;)

Here's how i did the texture stuff so far:

- Get decent sat image (we have afew no i guess) scale it to the correct resolution 1 [EDIT!]pixel=2 meters[EDIT!] (look at cars, roads...) -adjust the red/blue/green gamma settings and saturation/hue if needed

- Select an area for the generic/ F /all directions texture cut/copy it(not scaling) to the 512x512 size

- manual make the texture objects evenly distributed by copying small irregular parts around / filter any rough borders

-with photoshop filter offset it 20 or more pixels and make the borders dissappear by filtering/soften/blur or copying small irregular parts over the border

- first tile done -save it in true color pcx

-for testing reduce color to 256, name it after a generic existing tile replacing all T,M,H,L* ones

- Now do either the 16 river or 16 road tiles (see texture tutorial about the texture structure from *1 to *F)

-select the generic tile as basis copy a road/crossing from your sat pic into it making it fit on the border (use a grid or so and finally choose the offset filter for 3-5 pixes and make the last adjustments, begin with the f tile (roads from all directions and a crossing in the middle).
Take this tile then as reference for the correct borders

- place a few objects on crossings for diversity, since those tiles wont get repeated nearby normally - be sure to keep the tile borders the same as the generic one always.

- when all are done copy all of them in a huge 2048x2048 pic and save the paletta. Edit the paletta change color 253 to 256 to white for instance (n8 lighting) - save the paletta!

- open your 16/17 tiles individually - for each one decrease colors to 256 and open(=apply) the saved paletta in the pic. Save the pic as alway sin the pcx format(should be around 300KB with 256 colors)

-Check correct/good file names -test them by replacing existing ones or send them to the theater makers/snakeman

DONE!

What do you pay to know this? ;-) Took me literally days of research to find the perfect solution: www.saintpaint.com (I even registered..10$).
This is a nice little paint program that allows Palette Exclusion! (BTW: It's only the last FOUR colors) You select the palette colors that you want to have remapped and they get eliminated from the pictures (replaced by the nearest available color).
You then reload the pics in PSP, select one of the last four colors (I take the last one) and apply "lights" (I set about 2-4 light pixels per road tile, in the places where there are houses - just make a low flyby over my farm road tiles :-)

Seems time for a texturing group ? :D

For now i replaced 53 to 55 with white and reloaded the paletta so that psp chooses the next neaerst colors afaik. Then i guess i add some nightlightning later on by choosing appropriate colors and placing them as you said...

Thanks haven't yet tried that out but it might turn out very valuable on tile processing.

Speaking of those... any chance you could help us out creating ODS tiles?

Another Spanish´s State, done all with satelite, in english, really worth, just click in the small map and you get closer and closer till a resolution of 1 or 2 meters per pixel.
