ODS v0.512

Post by Snake Man » 2003-06-22 12:53:00

The tile makers have done great job with the 512 x 512 resolution tiles (textures).

ODS v0.4b preview 13 beta testers have been extremely helpfull pointing out bugs, errors or otherwise stupid stuff they've encountered in the theater.

Today, right now, I started to put together Operation Desert Storm v0.512 beta

If all goes well it should be out pretty soon and so will I.

If anybody have any last minute reports, comments etc regarding the previous version, please post them here.

Based upon SP3 database.
one campaign use modified SP3 database files.
in order to reflect correct loadouts etc etc.

for SP4 I hope to have setup a way to make theaters datbase independant,
this is already works out for all theaters except ODS 91 campaign wich uses a modified database.
right now we just copy/paste it in, but we are looking for a cleaner way to do so
any ideas would be welcome.

Have the entry in the theater defintiion file point at the standard SP4 objects folder and don't bother with a new one perhaps?

yes, that is a possibility
but both the fact that ODS is situated in 91 and the fact that it is a large theater makes dataedits 'needed' for realism.

If it were my Theater alone I would have waisted the 91 database long time ago :)
and go for current day scenrio's to make life easier.

The way we're doing it with our custom ODS 0.4b11 campaigns can prolly be done via the 0.512 Installer too

Use 2 databases

- 1 based on 1991 era stuff
- 1 based on SP3/4 current

- Use the Built in theater switching code to go back and forth

Any ETA on the Installer? I mite have some upcoming Vacation time in short order lol

Does the 0.512 installer already have working campaigns ?

If not... I Should be able to adapt our custom campaigns (historical and hypothetical 2003) in time to release them out to public as an alternative to the boxed 0.512 ones

KG, I´m on the fixes for the bridge tiles now. sorry to say, I´m not impressed with the way the rivers turned out on some tiles, correcting to make them look like my origonals.

If you have any freetime, would you like to continue on that desert airbase? After coming to a point with it, I couldn´t get my imagination to go any futher.

Never put me in the desert, I´ve already gone batty with one tile group.

hehe - well the textures for bridges and also rivers ending in the sea would be top priority right now

Then come airbases. For both you are the experts. Guys you will love Amis bases!!

Then come reworks of not so good tiles :D

We will see a new beta or preview after the weekend i guess- depending on how Snake and Wids progress with campaigns (which is far more difficult than our stupid texture work ;) )

Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign works, but the two fictional 2009 campaigns dont, dont ask me why.

Yeah the theater dir will be moved to the nice ODSTheaterAddon/ or something like that, keeps files nicely organized, one place to nuke the theater when people realize it sucks. Very cool.

Tiles are one big mess right now, I have totally and completely lost track what is latest what is not. Sure I've updated the stuff you KG sent me but thats as far as it goes. I was thinking of making some text file listing of all the tiles I got to index some of the stuff before actually sending them to you which is another big download for you guys.

We must sort out the tiles that all the latest and best tiles are in the texture.zip when next beta is put together.

With Widowmakers help (thanks) the whole damned ODS is now slammed into DesertStormTheaterAddon/ directory, very neat.

Also the rar packed files stand now at 220mb, but latest comments from UI clown claim it will rise again for few megabytes.

Now we need your help guys. We need names and themes so to speak to the "theaters" included in ODS... theater :)

Let me explain. This theater is called Operation Deser Storm, but it includes the historical ODS in 1991, then two fictional campaigns. Then it includes present day (SP3) theater which has no name, it has three not yet named campaigns. And to top of all that, it includes present day (SP3) theater Operation Iraq Freedom which has Operation Iraq Freedom campaign and two not yet named campaigns.

Let me illustrate this one more time

Operation Desert Storm
Campaign 1: Operation Desert Storm 1991
Campaign 2: Black Phoenix
Campaign 3: Persian Fury, Iran vs Iraq

Operation Persian Eagle
Campaign 1: Storm Menace
Campaign 2: Persian Guardian
Campaign 3: Desert Pilgrim

Operation Iraq Freedom
Campaign 1: Operation Iraq Freedom
Campaign 2: Persian War. US + Saudi + Iraq vs Iran.
Campaign 3: Babylon Guard

Please help us put together named and war campaign scenarios for all these theaters :)

Just a question for the terrain makers: will ODS theater be as flat as in version 0.3? The desert scenery was very flat with no, let's say, hills or dunes. Will there be any terrain "anomalies"?

Well I must have been extremely fortunate or something but after spending A LOT of time in my "assigned Grid Square B5" could not find anything "bad" to report. No CTD's, nothing. And spent a lot of time in the rest of the desert as well ...

From 55 to 220Mb :( ...

0.4 was already awesome, can't even begin to imagine what you have done in 0.5 ...

Yes

Maybe because you didn't have it?

There was no ODS v0.4b preview's with Operation Iraq Freedom, I just created it recently (ie during/after the war).

Hi Snakeman

No, not talking about your PMC one (Op. Iraqi Freedom) - I know you said you would be adding yours to the next (0.5) Beta.

The one I was trying was a "3rd party" one posted on Frugals (by Virus82). Being the adventurous type I tried to get it to work. Sort of OK on my one (Windows ME) machine but not my main Win 2K box. And I tried ODS B0.4 with that "other" EXE as well ;) You probably won't believe this, but I generally found ODS to be more stable than the (at that stage) "patched" Korea.

I have no doubt that the PMC Op. Iraqi Freedom plus all the "extras" will be excellent.

Dunno if itll help any Snake, but some of the weapons in FF1 were used in OIF, and werent in the SP3 DB, few including the CBU-10x WCMD series, and Aim-120C, and a working ALQ-184. Ive got tail art for the FF skinsets for those CJ units involved, (Mountain Home, McEntire, Shaw (77th) and Misawa (13th)), lemme know if ya want them.

plans are to leave the databse alone for ODS from now on including skins.

so basically ODS will use the database of SP3 when it is released for SP3.

if it is going to be released for SP4, then it should be compatible with SP4 and FF2.

For skinsets we depend on other parties so feel free to make one and if you do make sure it is compatible with at least SP4.

We hate to waist more time then absolutely needed on any databse issues for theaters it has become too much of a bitch right now to really care about.

i still remeber flying A10 in ODS.. after wiping out few battlions around Kuwait, allied forces won't enter and occupy the city, nor move north to persuit retreating battlion.

wonder if allied ground forces be more offensive in new campaign?

KingGeorge,

have a question for ya.

When the 512 beta becomes available, will previous TE's made with the earlier beta's still work or will they have to be scrapped.

They dont work because HomeBoy and Ratty did fabulous job linking ALL the theater's objectives and adding few more so old TE vs current theater objectives dont match anymore.

Altough I have no clue if the TE itself is holding all the objectives etc. This is more question to Codec or so...

But your old TE objectives and v0.512b theater objectives are in fact much different.

Thanks for the heads up on the TE question snakeman, guess I be waiting till beta 512 becomes available before I start the TE. One thing I would like to know though, will the falcon dance be needed to install the new beta or will one be able to just uninstall the previous version and replace.

If youre talking about the last public release which was v0.3 then you need to nicely UnInstall that using the add/remove programs. Then install ODS v0.512b

If you mean ODS v0.4b preview XX, then you need to manually delete the old ODS directories and theaters.lst entries for desstorm, then install ODS v0.512b

I'm hoping to write some sort of readme or manual entry about this.
