TacEdit-can't make pak map

Post by Sherlock » 2006-12-09 20:13:12

Working on ODS, experimenting and learning TacEdit.

Using the save0.cam file for ODS in F4:AF. All primary and secondary cities are identified. Created Occupation map just like the tutorial says. Try to create pak map and the map view turns to a white background; no map is generated.

any ideas what is going on? How to fix this?

thanks.

So is the save0.cam from the released ODS or modified somehow to AF?

Yeh, it had a pak map when you released but when Khronik brought it into his ODS OCI he put together for AF he couldn't get it to work so he deleted the pak map. I'm running his OCI install and trying to get a working pak map. Just looking for ideas on how to get it to work so we can access it in AF. Right now there is a file called Desstorm.pak but it has no image in it to display.

Hi Sherlock

PaK Map and Occupation Map creation are known issues for the 128x Theaters size...
....you remember my Occupation map thread ?

anyway , look at this thread :
viewtopic.php?t=18939&highlight=

Read what i suggested to Aplion , i dunno if that worked for him , but i can tell you that it works fine !
Peled wrote:Humm...ok , i remembered that i actually did what Twister just suggested in a thread at FF Board , so here's the solution , do not wait for 'morrow , just read it here, that's the trick : http://www.freefalcon.com/forum/viewtop ... ht=pak+map

it worked for me :)

a'hope it helped .

@Peled,
Thank you for that help

So the trick (according to Twister) is to give every objective a parentID and to create links (not parent links necessarily) to every objective?
Is this the proper understanding of what he is saying?

Is there a quicker way of doing this than doing it manually (individually) for each objective?

Right !....
.......ParentID and not Parent links ...
.....links are the important thing , tho do not budder yourself with linking Objs. that are Out of the area of war , since units will not get there anyway...
I dunno know other way then manually way.... in fact there's no such Tool for that.....
btw : i'd suggest to remove NoNames Objs , with a Script , they'r not neccesery ...

how many Objs you've got not linked ?
i am linking now about 700 Objs...more then that in ODS ? :)

There are 8,414 total objectives in the ODS save0.cam file. This is everything (junctions, radar stations, armybases, sam sites, depots, HQs, bridges, airbases, airstrips, factories, refineries, powerplants, cities, villages, radio towers, chemical plants, etc.)...you get the idea.

Do just the cities, towns, villages, and junctions need to be linked in order to get the PAK map? Or do all of the objectives need to be linked?

The answer (I think)...

Post by Sherlock » 2006-12-10 07:36:21

Ok, I finally wised up and went and looked at the Falcon 4 Korea save0.cam file. Here are some simple but very important rules to follow when laying out your links and ParentIDs in TacEdit.

1. All objectives MUST be linked to at least one other objective (this means every objective; airbase, airstrip, Army base, factories, refineries, SAM sites, etc.).

2. All objectives need to have a Parent ID of either a secondary or primary city (whichever city they are closest to usually).

3. All Cities must either be a secondary or a primary city (primaries not to exceed 49 cities).

4. Primary cities will have a Parent ID of 0 only.

Follow these rules and your campaigns should function properly and you should be able to build a PAK map no problem.

I will come back and post my results when I have some....Hopefully soon (depending on real life.... ;( )

TacEdit CTD after a few links input

Post by Sherlock » 2006-12-10 18:55:39

Ok, now I have a different problem...

Again, I am still working in ODS save0.cam file. I am inputting the links and parentID relationships that are lacking. It will let me put in 3-5 links and then TacEdit will lock up and stop responding. Eventually I have to force it to close.

I am running Windows XP SP2 with 1GB of RAM.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Sherlock , Try to explain me again pls......
Anyway ---most important rules :
Make sure you got the Corrected Properties for the Campaign you'r working on ! from my experience if the One of the Properties is not corrected you'll get nothing ...So----Go File--->Properties and make sure you got the correced Theater Dir and Current Dir for the Theater You'r working on , then the Theataer & General Strings will be setted up automaticaly for you....That's first , tho i assume you know that....'
Next.....Did you on the Map View , View-->Show Links ,View --->Show Relief Map(THR.) , Then Edit---->Link Mode ?
That needs to be done , for proper running of Linking Step....if you missed one of these Tacedit will Crash !
I have no problem to link up to 300 Objs or higher so far.....
I had only one Crash of Tacedit on a 128X Theater size linking Project , but since then all is fine and i got Up to 300 Objs Linked with No problem....

Let me know how goes.....

Hey , Snakeman , where's the Beers Smiley ? :)

EDIT : One more important thing Sherlock ! your FIRST Link should be between 2 Opposite Teams ! eg. Blue and Green (ROK/DPRK) then the THR. File will process the Path and go on and link , try link Objs along roads....

i would suggest you to read a Good Thread discussing about Linking a Theater, you'll find some good points there and even some suprizes like you do not need to link all Objs at all

Funny thing is that I worked all afternoon adding new parentIDs and TacEdit never hiccuped at all. I think it was the new links I was adding earlier. I haven't screwed up my courage enough to try again. The last time TacEdit CTD I lost everything in the Save0.cam file I was working on so I had to start over again. :( It reduced the Save0.cam file down to a zero (0) size file.

Sorry to hear that...
I hope you did a Backup.... :?
First rule is to Backup the *Uni. and the Total SaveX.Cam after each Modd.
IF You'r useing Tcl for Ground Units & Squadrons , it will take you just a Few minutes ...tho , keep backup.....

I hope you'll solve the linking issue...vy Strange thing there....
